Does Braid have a shelf life???

Featured Replies

I was looking around at my local tackle shop and noticed something strange. They had a pretty large stock of some

New Years special addition 832 braid?? Looked closer and it was a spool of 832 packaged up with a special addition Rapala floater with 2023 painted on it and 2023 stickers on the spool of line. All for only$10

I got to wondering if there was anything wrong with this stuff? Like had it been sitting on the shelf for too long? What do you guys think?

Braid is pretty much time-tolerant - I'd have no issues purchasing that if it was in a #-Test I used.

My buddy has some old braid that's been in his truck for most of its life, an unknown amount of time. I tried some when we were out and I needed some line. It was weak and I had several breaks before I gave up on it.

I believe stored correctly it’d be okay.. hot/cold cycling in a car for years I wouldn’t trust it… I have a partial arsenal of rods full time in my car from mid March through mid November.. the super cold months I bring very little out and rods come back in the house when not in use… A I fear ruining my line and B I don’t want to cause any problems with the epoxy on my rods.. I could be completely insane but these steps work for me.

I had 10lb power pro on a spinning reel for over 10 years and was still getting 14-15 pound knot strength out of it.

UV can breakdown Spectra fibers otherwise braid ins’t affected by shelf life.

Ive got 10 YO OG superslick on one of my shimanos.  Its been on the same reel for 3 years and performs as well as you could expect the older version of SS PP to perform.  I don't see anything but UV or extreme temp variation over years hurting PE.
