Gonna have to get good at middle of the day fishing

Featured Replies

Got a new schedule at work. So I won’t be able to do my 8-10am or so before work. I’ll be working from 5am-1pm. Gonna have to get god at those middle of the afternoon trips lol. probably be fine in fall and spring. Just the dead of summer that will stink.

All my truly giant fish are caught (usually) around 1-4 pm!  Also don't sleep on taking a nice long break and hitting the pond while the sun sets and most people pack up to go home!  Hoooo weeeee - that sure enough is some good fishing in the summer!

Go get em!  😎😉🤙🏼

You have mentioned that to me. And that’s kinda what I’m hoping for lol. And more later evening trips are definitely gonna happen.  We shall see if I can unlock any giants like you Pat.

I feel ya'

I'm usually on the water at daylight and off by noon this time of year.

I dislike the heat and the sun being straight up especially bluebird skies.

Cloudy days and steep shaded banks.

I'd love to be learned up on this, because all I seem to be able to catch during those hours is sun.

Yeah, Pat's a bass whisperer. Mid-day is hard for me too.

You could go before work and get your day started right. Unless you're scared of the dark.😁

I fish a lot during the hot part of the day. The bite is slower, but it's still there.

I assume you're bank fishing, like me.

I guess you already know to fish any shade, even if it's a tiny sliver.  I've found pretty good success using texas rigs and curly tail grubs.

I also have had success using crankbaits. Squarebills and deeper crankbaits in the 6' range that can get out to the edge of the shallower water. I've found that there is most often some type of structure change not far from shore - a weed line, or rock line, or drop off that the shallow bass often move to, but they don't go super deep, just to the next deepest structure, and are still available from the bank.

This ranges from about 10 feet out to 20 feet out, depending on the body of water.

The other thing I've had luck with working over that deeper area is topwater, specifically the Spit'n Image. I suppose any walking bait would work. I work them slower, with a twitch every 1 to 2 seconds most of the time.

Mid day time during the summer period is very different then the spawn cycle be prepared to do a lot of searching with less catching.

Better to be fishing than setting at home watching General Hospital.

Deep structure and wind are big middle of the day.  That's completely relative - applies to small ponds and lakes about the same - tidal river systems probably more about the incoming and outgoing tide.

I like wind because it typically activates the food chain and gets the thermal layers mixing and oxygenates the water etc.

This time of year a tiny ripple is better than flat.

Current is very very important.

Rain can make for some wild and crazy fishing mid day - especially the hour before the front hits and the first hour after it hits.

Target prime cover and structure before it hits and target inflowing drains or creeks or ditches from erosion or any place rain is concentrated and flowing into the body of water.

On those fun days where it's flat calm and there's no wind I'm going to fish any shade I can find.

I will fish finesse in the summer on days where there is no wind and no rain.  It's pretty much the one time of year I do it pretty consistently.

The most important thing to do this time of year is locate fish.  They tend to be pretty loaded in areas when you get a bite so I HIGHLY recommend moving fast and using something you can efficiently cover water with until you get a bite and then I might throw the kitchen sink in that area especially this time of year.

Good luck!

I still tend to think - if you you have the luxury of choosing - in the summer - windy sunny days and targeting deep structure with wind blowing across it can be the giant bass pattern mid day for sure.

Wow thanks for the detailed post Pat. I screenshot that lol. I’ll never remember it all!!

I was self employed for 15 years after retirement.   I would stop and fish whenever the opp. arose. Large Beetle Spins routinely caught nice bass in the middle of the day.

@Pat Brown thanks for the detailed info! I'm going to try to put that into practice

This time of year buzzbait or swimjig or swimming a worm usually get the call!

I wish my ponds weren’t so choked out and swim jigs still consistently worked. I can get a bite on them in certain water and conditions. I agree tho a big ribbon tai or uv worm every time. I got some cut-r 6 inch worms. Haven’t caught anything and don’t know how I feel about them yet
