Big swimbaits

Featured Replies

Anyone throw these in the summer?

Or they more of a spring/fall bait?

When I say "big" I'm talking like 5",  6" or so. I'm not throwing some huge trout looking thing here in little Iowa. lol

I put together a nice combo last fall and used it a little. Can't really fish at all in the spring due to work.

I don't see them mentioned a lot for the summer months.

Break it out or wait until the fall?

Thanks!

I throw them on and off all the time.  Soft swimmers dominate the warmer months for me; but I still like throwing the chad shad at night.  Glides tend to mostly be colder water baits for me, but I might be doing it wrong.  This is all in SW MI.

PS - @10,000 lakes Bassin reminded me about the B5 and it's been great getting bites out in the open water now that the shad fry are getting corralled.

Thanks for the reply.

Can’t wait for my first “big” swimbait fish.

I live in Indiana and the fish aren't huge here but they will hit a 6in swimbait pretty hard. I've caught a few big ones but it surprises me how many little bass will strike a 6in Magdraft or something like it.

I would start with the 5in though, something like the Magdraft or the 5in version from Bass Mafia just to see if its something thing that will catch fish in your area.

I have a couple of the 6" Magdrafts myself and a couple of those S Wavers.

That's it though.

Neither really imitate bluegill though.

I'll probably buy some bluegill type one of these days.

The lakes I fish are loaded with bluegill and they will still hit those shad shaped baits.

I would like to see a gill style bait to match these guys.  They are everywhere in one lake I fish. I generally have to fight through them to get a bass to bite. They will hit anything,  including a 5in swimbait.

Try these yet?

Wish they were slightly bigger. 3.2" isn't that big.

Got several of them. I have caught a few but its not been as good as I had hoped. I have had better luck with Geecrack Bellows Swimmer.  For a big bait, I've tried the Gillsoft 130 and did pretty well but I have only thrown it twice.

Yeah those Bellows Gills etc. look sweet.

I have a bag of the 4.8" Bull Flats that I'm probably going to try this weekend.

That Gillsoft 130 looks pretty good and $30 isn't terrible.

Edit: Oh dang it's a soft bait. Thought it was a hard bait. Hopefully it holds together well.  :)

You guys aren’t even scratching the surface of ‘big’. But to answer the question, big wake baits or slow sinking swimbaits bulged just under the surface is the bees knees at night or in the AM or especially in shade lines with current and structure.

Right now throwing:

Megabass Magdraft Freestyle 6"

Raid Osakana Slide

Deps Slide swimmer 250

Raid G-Dash

DRT Tiny Klash

7" Duo Versa Shad Fat

Duo and Magdraft into laydowns and almost topped out weeds.  Thules/pencil grass.  Like a frog.

G-Dash is kind of a wake/glide combo.  In place of a spook.

Osakana on outside weed edges

Tk,250 are year round producers

Yup.

I kind of meant.... In lure terms, panfish are usually referred to in gill patterns.  So typo on my part.

Might have to pick up one of those G-Dash baits.

Looks great.
