Anybody “drop grass” here ?

Featured Replies

I’m talking about what Seth feider and Matt heron talk about on bass university. This is where they are flipping a big weight, generally 3/4-1.5oz in deeper grassy particularly milfoil. They are looking for schools and once found they can sit there and catch a pile. Does anybody do it and is it reliable if you put in the time? What have you found success in?

I’ve seen it. Punching the thick stuff and then coming across a pile of fish, one right after another. Sometimes they’re there but not hitting quite yet, so coming around later on may surprise you! I’ve punched seemingly dead areas only to find them full of action later on.

Chris Lane did this once on Lake Eufaula with his famous drainage ditch run, sat there punching the grass one fish right after another, he didn’t move.

Do you have a link to the video? Are you talking about punching mats or punching submerged vegetation?

Submerged milfoil. 8-14ft with stalks all the way to the surface where there is a canopy in the bottom 1ft. All milfoil has this bottom open canopy

Interesting. So you’re talking about punching that bottom canopy? I’ll have to look into this more. I’m not very familiar with milfoil.

The word punching already exists. Yes, I punch with heavy jigs, T-rigs, and even make my own 1-2 oz. Jika rigs for this. It's been a staple for at least 30 years for me.

Thanks man. I guess I didn’t use the word punching because I too have punched a bit and always call that punch a matt that typically has water under it but that’s not normally punching into 8-10ft of water undwrneath

I haven't "dropped or punched" like that.  I've been partial to throwing a 3/4oz swim jig, and slowly reeling and breaking through the wall of weeds along the bottom, very erratic short handle turns till bit or it loads up on the next patch of weeds.  I've definitely run into an abnormally large bass population in 5x5 area doing this though.  The kind when you can make the exact cast 7-10 times and get fish on most, often they are above average in size and it's the interesting breaks in 8-14' fow where I target.  This is reliable for May and June, but starts to fade by the end of July on my lake.  I'm getting to the time of year when a lot of bass seem to abandon structure and cover and hunt shad on large 20-30' deep flats.

Yes, I've done that.  For milfoil, you don't need that heavy a weight.  If it's not too dense you can manage with 1/2 oz.  You can fish faster if you use heavier.  You are talking about vertical fishing and looking for sandy or rocky areas, clear of weeds, under the deep mats.  These areas are usually not very big and the fish are concentrated there.  This is a technique that is mostly used in the northern states.  It's fairly reliable but these spots are hard to find.  When you have a milk run, you go from one to the other until you find a bunch of fish.
