Favorite Fluke Rod?

Featured Replies

I fish a weightless fluke a lot. Right now my favorite rod is an Abu Garcia Black Max 6'6" M/M. I normally use 10 pound Big Game. The reel varies but currently is a Black Max 3 reel.

I can't imagine a better rod for fluke fishing, I digress, I'd like to know what rods everyone else likes for a dedicated fluke rod.

I throw flukes a lot myself and do so on a Lews KVD GS1 M-XF.

Prefer spinning because flukes skip really well and I can't skip with casting gear.

Prefer XF action because of the quick darting action of the fluke.

I throw them 2 different ways depending on cover.

5.0 owner screw lock for 5" flukes in grass and pads.

Scamper rig in shallow water, early spring 4"....... favorite.

Also like the action of Bass assassin as well.

For regular flukes I use a previous gen adrena 6'11 medium heavy mod fast. For mag flukes I use a 7' sierra medium heavy fast. Both of these have been good to me.

6’9” Falcon lowrider casting medium heavy fast

Lews lfs reel

I don't have just one rod dedicated to flukes. I have several that I use, but one of my favorites is a Kistler 7'6" MH F spinning rod and 4000 size reel that I use for long distance bombing casts all the way over lily pads and onto shore if I can make it that far and work it back to me. I like the longer rod for longer distance casting more than anything else. And VMC weighted and unweighted hooks usually a 4 or 5 are my go to right now until something else comes along.

7’ Veritas MH/F, Revo X, 12lb fluorocarbon. Gamakatsu 5/0 skip gap for 5” Fluke, go to a 4/0 Ryugi “standard” for the 4” Sakamata Shad.

The same as a my favorite wacky stick. Fenwick Elite 7’ MF spinning. This is for nose-hooked flukes. For weedless rigged I’ll use it on 7’+ MH casting rod.

If I am throwing them around grass on a casting rod (normal size, not magnum or mini) then it is my falcon finesse jig/topwater.  6’10”, MH (more M+), fast action.  Great for a true 1/4 oz of weight.  12 or 14# sunline and I can cast a fluke into tomorrow with it.

Is that an older rod?  I don’t know a 6’9” falcon.

Typo 6’7”

Falcon weightless worm or Loomis 802 TWR. Really, anything that will cast it will work.

Whatever you would use for a smaller topwater or jerkbait.

I used to fish them a bunch. I don't have many in the boat anymore but they are a good rod. I'm not sure they have kept up with some others in the industry.

They have some great actions , The weightless worm was designed to be a floatin' worm rod but it does other stuff great. Personally I think it's the best stickbait (jerkbait) rod they make.

I fished them years ago, late 90’s I just found that with Loomis they covered all my needs. Lately I’ve been hearing more about them again. It’s hard to know if you can’t get your hands on one.

Most of the time I’m using a mh/f 6’6” St. Croix Premier casting rod.

6'10 Adrena from the previous generation.

I tend to throw larger fluke style baits with a 4/0 superline hook on a MH or H rod; 73 MH Adrena, Enox BMJ, Super Destroyer, etc.

BPS older spinning rod, CarbonLite 6'9 MXF , I just feel comfortable with it instead of my St Croix older Mojo jerkbait casting rod with Curado 70XG.
