Do you trim your jig weedguards?

What do you do and what is your logic concerning it?

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t.

I do, A little longer than the hook point and fan it out.

If I trim them, it's just to make them a bit shorter if they seem long, not to taper them. I will remove bristles from the front edge if they are too stiff to my liking.

I trim it so that when I fold the weedguard down, it just touches the hook barb. No rhyme or reason; it’s just what I do. I will also sometimes take away strands. That’s pretty much it. I never fan out a weedguard.

I do trim it, but man… jigs are my kryptonite. I swear I can’t catch a thing on them. One time in a bass tournament, I lost 8 jigs in a single day because rookie me didn’t know braid would slice like butter on the rocks. 😅 Lesson learned the hard (and expensive) way.

Depends on jig type. But yes and if I do it’s at the base of the jig and from the back, then from the top. Also I spread the nylon and flex it downward a couple times and fish it..

Trimming if needed down to the base from the front causes those short stubby pieces to catch and pull in garbage, unless you can truly cut flush.

I just fan it out or leave it stock - sometimes I’ll remove strands to thin it out but extremely rare.  I don’t like how trimming it makes it stiffer - not helpful for how I fish jigs and set the hook.

I usually leave it alone, but some that are excessively stiff I heat up with a lighter and splay out a little bit.

If I'm targeting hard cover like laydowns, dock pilings, or heavy brush, I'll trim them short to stiffen up.

Otherwise, I may trim them if I feel they're excessively long, but most of the time I'll just fan them out or clip a few strands off.

Only if they seem too long for comfort (or confidence). More often, I thin them a little bit by removing a few stalks with a nail clipper. Usually swim jigs.

Is everyone using heat to fan them out?, or is there another way to fan them out?

Most of them will fan out just from manual pressure. But…..I started heating them after some jigheads had the entire weedguard fall out while

trying to spread it out.
