Fluke Hooks for Smallmouth

Featured Replies

I’m wondering what size Owner Twistlock hook would work best for smaller flukes like the Fluke Jr and 4 inch Caffeine Shad. I love throwing the 5 inch superflukes for smallmouth but the hookup rates aren’t great. I did have more success using 4/0 owner twist locks but did seem to do a bit more damage to the mouth of the smaller and midsized bass, maybe due to the larger hook size. I was thinking about trying the thinner wire twist locks and maybe downsizing the flukes a bit. Any advice is appreciated. I’d like to find a good hook/fluke combo that doesn’t hurt the mouth if the fish too much and still has a good hookup rate so I’m looking in the 3.5” to 4” range possibly.

I don’t really like Owner hooks for the damage that they do to the fish.

For a 4” fluke, I mainly go with a 2/0 Gamakatsu G-finesse EWG, but will go to a 3/0 when they’re actively chasing.

3/0 twist lock light

This.

I keep these in 1/0, 2/0 and 3/0. This is one of my primary Free Rig hooks. I upgrade the Twistlocks up a size (as needed) and they hold very well.

This is a really good hook.

I use the Dolive Stick 3.5 or 4.5 as my fluke.

Here's the 3.5" with a 1/0 Twist Lock Light

I like 3/0 ewg Gama. I hook it lower in the nose of the fluke and gives it crazy action.

Either 3/0 or 4/0 twistlock light depending on the specific bait.  The last fish I caught on the 4/0 was a 12" crappie and it didn't tear up the mouth any more than a #2 jig hook.
