Plastic Trailer Compatibility

Featured Replies

Let me ask a trailer question to the collective; how soon do you pre-rig your plastic trailers (?), when you’re at the water or a week/day or hours ahead of time?

Most plastic are impregnated with some sort of attractant/salt so has rigging lures a week or days ahead of time been an issue? I usually pre-rig my swimbaits, spinnerblades and under-spins and store in a “up next on deck box”.

Typically I rig up my lures ahead of time and may not fish for a week but not sure if this a deterrent or perfectly acceptable. I do make sure not to cross contaminate different brands (Elastech with Power baits or Yamamoto etc.) to eliminate the brands from breaking down each other.

Anyone have issues with adding trailers and letting them sit? Any specific brands that can create issues other than elastech?

If it has salt added you will have rusting hooks if left on to long. I use a lot of Zoom products and most have a lot of salt added to them and if I forget to take them off I have rust issues plus I fish brackish water which only increases the problem.

Not only will I pre-rig, but I’ll place those I swap out while fishing back into the box or bag.  I don’t give a thought to how long they’ve been stored, and it has never bothered the fish when I’ve tied on a stored one.  In fact, I’ve probably caught as many or more on jigs that have been rigged for who knows how long as I have on those I rig while on the water.  If the fish don’t care, I can’t think of a reason why I should.

Nice solution but my storage considerations are much too small to accommodate individual containers. I like it though!

Yeah I have rigged lures but haven’t stored several at one time in one container, as I’m doing now with my “next up” box.

I don’t typically put them away wet and saltwater isn’t an issue for me, but I get it. I can see wet heavy salt plastics causing an problem on stored hooks.

This is how they are stored in my shore fishing bag.

I use the bag solution sometimes but don’t store anything long term (couple weeks or more) especially paddle tails. The bag compresses the tail and long enough storage deforms the completely.

My “on deck” box, a double sided Plano box is what I use for an outing for lures that I will cycle through during the day. So, it brings me to my original question of how long can I store plastics together (pre-rigged) before it affects the plastic? And are there brands that don’t play well together (other than Z-man brand)?

Strike King has a whole lineup of Elaztech baits.  But they don't have an army of pro-staffers swarming social media and these forums.  So you don't hear about them as much.

I don't put them on in advance, just me.

I'll put them on right before I hit the water in the kayak.

Call me anal, but to me it seems like many of the soft plastics stay more soft and supple when stored in their original bags.

In my pee sized brain, it seems like they can dry out if left out for too long.

Really! Totally unaware of this!

I put on my trailers when I get out on the water.
