Fluoro vs mono size?

Featured Replies

I normally use 10lb (.012) or 12lb (.014) Big Game mono. I think I get more bites though when I downsize to 8lb (.011). I have some Trilene Fluoro in 10lb (.012).

Will that 10lb fluoro be equivalent to the 10lb mono as far as fish detecting it/getting bit because it's the same diameter?

Will I get more bites on the 10lb fluoro or the 8lb mono?

Okay, so I am planning to buy a better quality fluoro, probably Invizx. Should I go with 8lb or 10lb, or another weight? This is for the mainline on a casting reel.

Basically I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how to pick a fluoro size.

Fluoro should be slightly smaller diameter than mono, which plays out in the chart.

Chart says 12-lb Invizx is the same diameter as 8-lb BG mono.

It's also 70% heavier than mono, so it will weigh down your spool more (slower spool start, more casting brake needed), especially if you fill a deeper spool with smaller diameter line.

You can also back your spool halfway with bigger diameter mono than you normally use, and top the spool with your smaller-dia. working line.

My dad always filled his spools with 25-lb mono, which made it really easy to strip it down some and top with 12-lb fluoro from my bulk spool.

So, if I feel like I get more bites on 8lb Big Game mono, should I get an equivalent size diameter of fluoro, or should I get the equivalent pound rating, and thus have a much smaller size? Or should I get the 10lb?

I think it's safe to say I'm somewhat confused.

For me it varies.  I choose mine by the surrounding area and the application.  When I am fishing timber I use the setups with 12# fluorocarbon.  When there isn’t timber I use the 10 #.  If I am fishing Ned or something similar I drop to the 8#.

If I had to pick one size it would be 12#.

On a bait caster ?With Invisx,  10 for the pee wee jig and lighter shaky head . 12 for everything else I’m dragging.

It appears you’re overthinking this my man.  Use whatever flouro has the same diameter as 8lb big game or just use 10-12lb flouro which will likely be near that 8lb big game diameter. You can still have a low diameter but higher breaking strength with flouro

As mentioned above, the diameter is smaller with most fluorocarbons.  I'd go with 10lb for crankbaits and jerkbaits and 12lb for everything else. Invizx is a good place to start with fluorocarbon.  Its easy to use and holds up pretty well.

Sensitivity with fc is kind of subjective. Overall, it has some advantages over mono in that regard but it can depend on the rod, lure, and probably a dozen other things.  Using it effectively and gaining confidence in it, are probably the biggest hurdles with fc.

While I agree that most FC has a smaller diameter specified, I've found that the specs are not always accurate.  If you really want to know a line's diameter, measure it. Whether FC, mono, or braid.

You can check the diameter of the mono you are using, and the fluorocarbon you are looking at. Generally, 8lb mono would be 10lb fluorocarbon but some are different. Berkley Trilene fluorocarbon is the same diameter as XT or Big Game mono.
