Natural or Synthetic Skirt for Jigs

Featured Replies

Do you think marabou or bucktail skirts on jigs are more effective than synthetic, or synthetic are better, or no difference?

For cold water (under 40 degrees) bear hair works the best. Going to try some other materials though.

Rubber has the best action IMO. The Cumberland Blaukat jig is actually really good . Otherwise just silicon for me.

I learned jig fishing on maribou. The ol' jig and pig but I wouldn't go back to it.

I’ve used it all. I used nothing but homemade buck tail jigs for years. I carried them in over 20 color combinations in 3 sizes. I don’t know how many I have caught on them. I fished them all year long.

Then I got to using living rubber and got away from bucktail. I used rubber exclusively for several years then tried silicone for the color options.

Now I carry all three types and vary which I use. I have grown partial to the Pee Wee jigs made by Jewell. I make some of my own but also buy there skirts for a change of pace.

I the water column I’ll take bucktail. On the bottom give me rubber or silicone.

There are scenarios for both. I like Sieberts living rubber jigs a lot. I also like silicone. Jigs with a mix of both are unique and allow that movement and vibrancy in color patterns.
