We will not forget.

This is the home of the brave.

We will live in the peace that their sacrifice gave.

I can't even imagine.

And those Higgins boats (officially designated as LCVPs) carried American soldiers to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. While the U.S. Navy provided command and transport vessels, Coast Guardsmen acted as the coxswains (the person who steers the boat and controls the throttle) for the smaller landing craft during that infamous invasion.

One of the two days of the year I would never work. I dare not imagine our country without our warriors.

Years ago, I had a conversation with my wife. I told her I joined the United States Army Reserve in 1978 and was honorably discharged in 1980 as an E-5, but felt like I had never done anything of worth. Even though it was during a heightened period of the Cold War, it was likely the most peaceful period the US has seen in the 20th and 21st centuries. She said she was proud of my service, but I was still bothered by what I would say was guilt.

Not long afterward, I met a group of younger vets who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. I told them the exact same thing I told my wife. These guys faced combat. I did not. And every one of them told me the same thing. They said “When you took the oath, you signed a blank check with Uncle Sam that could have been cashed at any time. Just because it wasn’t, doesn’t make your service any less than ours”.

They have no idea how much that meant to me , especially after what they had witnessed. But years later, after truly thinking deeply about it, I began to understand exactly what they meant. You join the military and when they say stay, you stay, and when they say go, you go. But either way, you’ve made the decision that if it’s go, you’ll go without hesitation. And some that go never return. There is no greater sacrifice and they have my undying gratitude.

My most sincere Thank You to all of you on here who have served regardless of how, where or why you chose to. I did not serve but my father and brother did and my youngest son’s best friend just recently graduated from the Great Lakes Naval Academy and is deploying to Japan this summer. He is like a 3rd son to my wife and I and we couldn’t be more proud of him for signing up without hesitation. God Bless the USA and all of our service men and women 🇺🇸
