What Rod and Reel for $350-$400

Featured Replies

My birthday is coming up in a tad bit, and there's not much that I can think of to ask for, aside from some fishing stuff!

I want a Gloomis rod , no exceptions, I'm finally able to get one, but I don't know much about them to make a decision.

As for a reel, I'm really up in the air about what to get.

I figure a better rod is more important so $220 or so for a rod and maybe a $150 reel would be good.

I want this rod to be perfect for jigs. My other rod I got for jigs, is nice, but I am having fun throwing heavier plastics on it, and some other fun rigs.

Suggestions please.

Hey I hve a deal for you . Lend me 400 bucks , so I can get a rod and reel in this calss and I will let you knoow how good it is

I've never fished a Loomis, so I can't help there.

But...

Revo SX or STX for the reel.

I was thinking about the Revo STX although it's $200 and that leaves me $200 for a rod, and after looking at the loomis rods, Looks like I'm going to spend around $250 on the rod, unless there's better places to buy them from then BPS.

So maybe the Revo SX? It's a possibility, but without a shimano reel, I may feel lost  ::(

REVO SX

Get the Revo SC from Cabelas and put more into the rod...or at least thats what I would do.  I like the high gear ratio for jigs and plastics because it allows you to recover slack more quickly prior to hookset.

Ebay! Ebay! Ebay.!  Why pay full price when you can "bid on it" or use the "buy it now" option for less.  As far as GLoomis rods go I personally don't care for them. IMHO I thing the St. Croix Tournament Series rods are better.

This is the rod: http://www.reedssports.com/Product.taf?_function=detail&_ID=555

$234 with your discount, no sales tax and no shipping charges

This is the reel: http://www.reedssports.com/main.taf?cat=1187

$120. You'll need to decide which size and gear ratio is best for you, but I would go with the CI200D (6.2:1).

$354 total cost

BTW, If I only had one rod, this is the one.

Way too much money....

RoadWarrior's suggestion for the IMX MBR844C is dead on (as most of his advice is). That is one rod that a lot of people digg. The only thing I'd add is if you do not fish in heavy cover or deep waters, you may want to check out the IMX MBR783C. Honestly, last year I was in the same boat you are in now. I did a lot of research and went with the MBR783C paired up with a Curado 100D, and it's been an awesome setup. I know a lot of the guys who fished the old Curado's don't care as much for the new ones, but I think anything by Shimano in that price range is quality. There is no doubt that in the fishing gear world you get what you pay for.

I don't fish too many heavy cover situations, but who knows in the future. I'd hate to get an expensive rod then a year later be fishing heavier cover.

Is there a reason why having the 783 would be better in some situations? Is it any more sensitive or ...?

Both look great..

The 844 is more of a deep water rod and has more backbone than the 783 since it is a heavy powered rod ( the 783 is medium heavy). It's rated to be able to throw heavier weighted baits, so I view it more of a big bassin rod. I don't know if it would necessarily be better to have the 783, the main thing is it's not gonna be as powerful as the 844. So personally, I always would rather not be over powered when catching fish, it makes it funner. But both are killer rods that you'd be happy with. Also, I don't own an 844, I'm just basing everything off what I've read. Maybe you could find a retailer that carries Loomis's and you could check them both out.

EBAY EBAY EBAY!!!!.  I got the new Curado 100 for $130 brand new, it's $200 at TW.  Just keep your eyes open, they are always coming and going.  I was patient and waited until this one came up and then I snagged it.  Good Luck

Yep, ebay a curado but I like to cherrypick rods locally at BPS or Cabelas....my next will be a IMX Loomis.

There's no BPS or Cabelas within 1,000 miles of me. =\

That bites...I have both a Cabelas and BPS within 40 minutes of my house and I live in Kansas of all places :(. Well, cheer up cause it looks like you should have a BPS close by soon....
