got the wrong reel

Featured Replies

am i better off?

i know that the curado is a better reel than the citica - so here's the story....

i ordered a citica 201 D from a major retailer recently.  I paid $95.97 for it free shipping...Well the package came via ups today and when i opened the box there was a brand new curado 201 DPV!!!!!!

the only reason i'm asking the question is because i don't know what the DPV model is???  can you all shed some light on this?  also, the reel has a 5.0:1 gear ratio.

What do y'all think?

Price wise you got a hell of a deal!

CU201DPV at cabelas is $199.99

CI1201D at cabelas is $119.99

As for performance I am not sure but it looks to me like you made out

You got yourself a crankbait reel. I have one myself on my crankbait rod...very smooth and casts for miles...I LOVE mine!

Im looking to buy that exact same reel for my cranking rod so if you hate it or looking for a different gear ratio make me an offer through a PM.

Well, that's a great $ value, but 5.0:1 gear ratio is fairly technique specific. I have two CTE200GT which are 5.0:1 which I use on a deep cranking rod and a jig rig. However, if you plan to use the reel for "general purposes" I think you will find it cumbersome. The IPT is 21" which is very slow.

would it be good to use then for spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jig and pigs?  that's what i will be using this for

It's a perfect reel for crankbaits and jigs.

For spinnerbaits, maybe (slow-roll, not burning).

why is it perfect for jigs??  explain that for me please.

You will tend to fish them slower and when you get bit you can crank a 1/2 ton truck out of a ditch!

ok...i see.  Thanks!!!

Being the old f_rt that I am, let me say that 5:1 can do anything you want.  I remember when 5:1 first came out and it really made burning spinner baits easy compared to my old Garcia 5000 that I think was 3.5 to 1.  Granted I like the 5:1 older Citica I have for deep cranks, and my 6.2:1 Citica's for everything else I do including some cranks, but 5:1 can work for anything you need it to.  It certainly does make running the deep cranks a lot easier since it has more "power".

You got a great deal, enjoy it.

alright then one more question.....i've got 2 rods to choose from to put this new reel on.  The majority of the time i'll be using this for jigs but will tie on spinnerbaits and crankbaits if i'm just not having any luck with the jig and pig...my question is which rod would should i put this on?

Fenwick HMX  7' MH power fast

or

St. Croix Premier 7' M power fast

Ideally, you want a rod with Moderate Action or a soft tip to fish crankbaits (all treble hooks). So, the Premier MIGHT be the better choice. However, for jigs and spinnerbaits the Fenwick is probably the ticket. You will have to play around with them and choose.

This is an easy one.  If you are not looking for a crankbait reel (which is all I would use it for) then sell it.  You could probably get $150 (plus shipping) for it.  Reorder the Citica for $95.97, which you wanted in the first place and with the $54.03 profit you made from selling the Curado, you effectively paid $41.94 for a Citica.  That sounds like the a deal of the century to me.

No one else would feel bad about keeping the reel?  He got something that he didn't pay for didn't he?

  • Super User

The right thing to do would be to talk with the retailer. I suspect they would rather he keep the reel than going through the exchange process, but I do see your point and agree.

that was my first thought too.  i don't know what i'm going to do yet.

I thought they would probably tell me not to worry about it and keep the reel but the more I think about it i would just be talking to some customer service rep who really doesn't care what happens or the fact that i'm now having to wait another 2-3 weeks to get the actual reel that i originally ordered (shipping this one back and receiving the new one).  so like i said - i haven't made up my mind yet.

Did it come in a Citica box?  If it did, it's probably someone else's return.

  • Super User

i'd keep the thing!!!

you got one steal of a deal. like everyone said, that is a beautiful crankbait reel. either go buy a crankbait specific rod for it, or put it on the st. croix. if you are using jigs on it, then i'd put it on the fenwick, like RW said.

no it came in a curado box with all the curado paperwork, shimano reel tool and oil.  it's brand new.

If kept without contacting the company a STEAL of a deal is exactly what he is getting.

Isn't there a thread somewhere involving a golf club?  I remember the consensus being "do the right thing"

Yes, and here's Glenn's comments on the matter:

And how often do you "burn" a jig.  If anything, a ratio like this is an excellent suggestion for guys looking to get to the next level with jigs.  This almost forces you to slow down.  i.e. the next level, slowing down and creating discipline
