I am looking into buying a Core to go with my carrot stix.  Right now I have it paired with a curado 200dpv but I just don't like the way it feels.  It's 5.0:1  is just to slow for me.  The carrot stix is a 7'3 MH fast that I use for worms and jigs and flippin as well.  Any way my question is do I need to spend the extra money for the 100mgfv (7.0:1) or can I get away with the 100mg 6.2:1?  Also I'm trying to decide what to do with the curado, it is not even a month old, should I sell it or keep it for another purpose?  What is a reel with a low gear ratio like that good for?

The reel you bought (5.0:1) is for crankbaits, specifically deep divers.

Most of what I have heard about the Core has been very favorable, but some have reservations as to its relative value verses the CH50MG. The Core definitely has some bling-bling factor! Picture that black beauty on your orange Carrot Stix. Sounds pretty cool, eh?

I don't have any reference for commenting on 6.2:1 vs. 7.0:1.

The difference in line pick up is 2 inches per turn

Add 0.6 oz in weight because of the heavier gearing

Add $ 30 bones.

I dunno is the extra 2 inches in line pick up is worth 30 dollars, as for the Instagage II system, well I think of it as the flipping switch in some of my older reels, I can count the times I 've used it; perhaps being the Instagage more friendly I could use it more; the increase in weight isn 't much and after fishing with an almost 10 ounce reel like you 've been doing I don 't think its would matter much to you; bigger knobs ? hmm, bigger how big ?; stronger gearing ? could be.

As for the Curado, bad business, you won 't get near as what you paid for it.

What is it good for ? crankbaiting.

I have no personal experience with either of the reels you mentioned but I do have several reels in 7.0:1 and 6.2:1. While the 7.0:1 is definately faster than the 6.2:1 it is not a huge difference. If you are going to be using the rod for flipping I would go with the 7.0:1 because it gets your bait back to the boat a lot faster and ultimately gives you more casts.

I have the Shimano Curado 200DHSV 7:0:1 gear ratio and I love it.

I can fish it fast or slow.

I use 14 or 17 pound test and it works beautifully.

So give it some consideration.

Now, what to do with the 5:1 reel?  Keep it and give yourself another crankbait setup.

Thanks for the input fella's.  The curado was only $120 and a friend offered me $100, so that is fine with me especially since I didnt even pay for it (Bday gift).  I already have a curado 7.0:1 reel which I really love for just about anything.  So I was really just thinking if I  need two high speed reels.  The lakes I primarily fish do not have any heavy cover to speak of, well nothing I really need the extra gear for, so I will go with the 100mg.

I have a cardiff 200a (6.?:1) that I like for cranking and since I don't really do much deep cranking it is fine for me.

I have the 6.2 to 1 101MG Core and love it.  It casts a Senko better than any other reel I have owned.  It also will pitch a jig with ease.  

On the downside it is not as smooth as I would like.  I was thinking that it would be something like my Calais but the feel, minus the usual small amount of backplay from Shimano, reminds me of my Daiwa Zillion.  Also, it is similar to the 50MG but costs quite a bit more.

Bottomline, so far, it has become my favorite reel.

Not neccessarily... If a few people say the chronarch is a better choice for less money, that maybe enough to change my mind.  But the core would look sweet on a carrot stix.

I am one of the guys who says the 50MG is "as good" in use.  There is little practical difference in how they fish.  They both are super light, smooth as a baby's butt and a joy to use.  For the price difference, I think the 50MG is a much better value.  

The core is great looking, no doubt... but will the red spool and accents clash with a carrot stick?  I think so!!

There are some red trim rings around the grips on the carrot, basically making it a perfect match w/the core .

I would even consider spooling it up w/red Power Pro braid .

The Core isn't black.  And the red is metallic.  Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the fish won't care.

Well I pulled the trigger on the Core today.  It is light as a feather and casts like a dream.  And on the carrot stix it is amazing.  If only my camera was working I would post a pic of it.

I've got a couple of Core's matched with Carrots.  The Carrots have red winding checks and the reel matches perfectly.

It's a thing of beauty....
