I'd like to get my two boys started on spinning reels. What are some good models that have the trigger and are easy to cast? The boys are 9 years old and have been using spincast reels. We fish for bass and bluegill on 4-6 pound mono.

I have spinning reels with triggers ( Shimano Solstace, Abu Garcia Ultracast 62 ), I don 't think they are good for what you want them for:

1.- The trigger can break

2.- The antireverse is definately not infinite, the handle has a lot of back play to allow the rotor to realign so you can use the trigger.

Want to teach the kids ----> teach them to open and close the bail manualy.

I always try to recommend what a fella is looking for. All my experience with trigger reels were extremely negative, I would follow Raul's suggestion.

I know the Mitchell Copperhead has a trigger and used to cost around 20....not sure if they still make them but I too think it would be best to teach them how to properly cast and close the bail without a trigger....I would suggest a Mitchell Advocet or an Abu Garcia Cardinal

Shimano Spirex are a well made reel with a trigger.  My main issue with this type of reel is that they usually lack infinite anti reverse.  Instead, they backup to a point where the trigger device at the top so its always there when you are ready to cast.

Second guessing about the trigger almost makes me think they might not be ready but not exactly a scientific theory.

 That being said my 2 9 yr old daughters can cast a spinning reel just fine. They started a couple of years ago. They even close the bail by hand etc.

   I'd say go for a non trigger. Buy a Pflueger pres or an Abu Cardinal but don't cut it to cheap or the kids will get frustrated ( I'd skip the Mitchell). If they aren't ready or lose interest at least you have viable reels to sell or use.

 Also I might be in the minority on this but I would rig them with braid. Use a floro or mono leader if you want but use braid for the main line. For a beginner braid is a godsend as it all but eliminates line jumping off the reel like a slinky. The kids will be less likely to get frustrated.

 Let us know how they do with whatever you decide. This could be avaluable thread for many others.

I think the advice on not going that route is sound. At their age, they are more than ready to use spinning reels with ease.  If you do a search of kids and reels, you will find that there are kids their age, enjoying the use of casting reels. Give them yours so that you will have an excuse to purchase new gear.  ;D

Shimano Spirex is the only option.

 You probably can't go wrong on about any Shimano you choose.

Also the Gander Mtn models beginning with GST...  ou can find on E-bay on occasion. I've bought some for $20-$35. The are a very close match to the Pflueger Medalist. They also call that the "Tournament " series

get them a normal spinning rod. you'll be surprised how fast they pick it up.
