Huh?

Most of the "collectors" buy technique specific gear which dictates

a number of specific reels. A lot of guys have several brands, others

have their head in the sand and only buy one brand. :D

Start with the best you can afford and later buy the ones you can't afford. ::)

Generally, my combination costs break down 2/3 reel/ 1/3 rod,

but I still don't skimp on the rod. My collection is somewhat generic

and "domestic". The next hurdle is "Made For" the Japanese market

and "Custom". Once you find your dream rig for around $2000, you

get it "upgraded" with all the bling-bling you "need". Take a perfect

reel and improve it! $250 ivory handles is an example.

I could see 2 completely definitions of "collecting" with regards to reels.

For any given item of any kind in general "collecting" to me most roften efers to old or antique items. I'm not that type of "collector"

Two weeks ago I wouldn't have thought there was any other kind of collector. Ironically I just a day or 2 ago decided that I am a "collector" of reels but not the old or antique type. I just flat out like fishing reels thus my inability to be able to part with many of them. The inability is partly due to just hating to part with somethig for a pittance when I paid a good price for it.

Maybe elaborate on what you meant on collect.

I read this 3 or 4 times and all I could think of was " RW said that???"

Then I noticed the smiley face ( ok perception is not one of my strong suits)

My definition is also around the world " Limited " with enhancement like " Custom ", " Tuned " and " Aftermarket "...not necessarily old or vintage.

I can relate to that. I have a hard time getting rid of them; even the ones that don't get a lot of play time. It's like I just want to try them all out, and then keep them "in case I want to use them someday." :D

I understand the enjoyment of collecting antique rods/reels/lures. But too actually be able to acquire those items in mint condition is very rare. And the price, unbelievable! As for the more recent equipment such as the Ito's, they are a gem!! I would love to have one on the wall! Maybe one day....maybe, one day....*sigh* ;D

For now, as close to antique as I get is reels from the 80's. I have a Quantum QL 250, bought at a flea market for $20, with a graphite frame and graphite spool, 2 bearings and it still works. Currently, I really, really want a Daiwa Prolite...I don't know what it is, but it's so bad@$$!!

I have a ton of 'old' rods and reels that I inherited from my grandfather who taught me to fish.

Some freshwater, saltwater and flyfishing gear.

If I sold it all I could probably buy a new bass boat but I can never sell what he wanted me to have.

Included in this collection are 2 Orvis split bamboo flyrods.  1 -6' and 1 -9'.
