Lucky Craft Real Skin baits

I like Lucky Craft as much as the next guy.  But this idea of putting real squid skin over a lure then coating in laquer seems a little wierd.  LC claims that over time the skin, by way of scratches, will let off scent.  If the skin still has sent, won't it also deteriorate and rot?    Hmmm.

LC makes really nice baits.  But their quest for realism seems to be increasing the fragility of their baits.  My DD Pointers with scales are starting to look pretty shoddy.   The squid skin things seems downright silly to me.

I couldn't agree with you more. Although once in awhile these innovative ideas are really breakthroughs and money makers. So in time we will see!

i was a little weary at first but i got one to try in the spring

It's rare for Tackletour to write anything but a glowing report of nearly every product they "test". I think the candor in this review is to be applauded.

Personally, I am a huge fan of the LC Pointer and I was looking forward to purchasing one of the Reals Skins. But after reading the review, it sounds like they just made a cosmetic change to an already proven lure.  I don't think they will be worth the extra $5. :'(

I agree. I have one and haven't noticed any difference.

Oh, but wait till it gets a deep scratch and starts eeping squid smell.  You'll have every tuna in the lake beating a path to your door.

i bought some back in march when i went to japan and they seem to work the same as the standard lucky crafts, but as a lure junkie i like to have them :D

hahaha for sure

I like my real skin pointer because it's pro's outweigh it's con's.

RS Pointer Pro's: "skin" acts as a protective layer to the painted on finish making it more durable than a regular pointer. The finish is unique. They have the same action as a regular pointer.

RS Pointer Con's: The hooks are not durable and pull out pretty easily. And as Tackle Tour said, the red hooks finish comes off.

Regular pointer Pro's: Cheaper and work as good. I think the regular pointers' hooks are stronger.

Regular pointer Con's: The hooks and bass destroy the lure's finish, unlike the real skin pointer that has the "skin" as a protective barrier.

That picture above shows how the regular pointer gets killed without the protective barrier

This picture show how the real skins hooks pull out pretty bad

The whole premise intrigues me.

LC says the skin is applied, trimmed, dried, then coated in lacquer.  THEN they say the skin will emit scent if there is a scratch through the lacquer.

If the skin starts giving off an appreciable scent, it would have to be because the skin has rehydrated (at least partially) which means it's going to deteriorate rapidly.   Will the lacquer start coming off over rehydrated skin?  Sounds like a big mess to me.

I know it's neat, Japanese, and expensive.  But I think I'll pass.  My LCs with normal finishes work reasonably well and cost enough.

Thank you for that TackleTour report, it's a huge relief.  I was worried that they'd be awesome and I'd have to buy a bunch.  Phew!

What gets me is that they say ol Swindle caught every fish in the tank after they had ignored other LC cranks.  What about other jerks?  Who is to say that he wouldn't have caught every fish in the tank on a regular pointer?  What it boils down to for me is you are paying five extra bucks for a different pattern.  Is is worth it?  For some, sure.  I've seen guys spend three times what a lure is worth just because it had a "sexy shad" pattern.  But I don't think I'll be buying one any time soon.

Thats exactly what I thought when I first read that article.

The top one has more gleam.  The skinned one looks way more subdued.

That one looks pretty good, how many times have you used it?

Imo I don't think its going to be anything revolutionary for freshwater atleast. Although I'd like them to make a larger size, maybe for salt water it would make a difference, I think salt water fish go after scent more then freshwater, so for salt water I'd be willing to give them a try if they made a 7-9 inch sized pointer in schoolbus pattern.
