I need a new worm rod!!!

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I have been in search for a worm rod to pitch t-rigged plastics for the last couple months now. I have bought 4 rods so far and none have met my expectations! I bought a Powell Max, St. Croix Mojo, All star Platinum and a Kistler worm rod. I sold the All Star and the Kistler and will be selling the Powell and Mojo also. I need a rod in at least 7' with Heavy or extra heavy power and a fast or ex fast tip. I pretty much want a fliipin' sticks characteristics in a 7' rod. I also want the split grip handles, no fore grip feature and fuji components. Every rod so far has been very over rated in there actions and power! Can anyone recommend a rod for me or do they not make one like this yet, LOL?

Kistler Helium  II LTX He2HC70  7' Heavy Fast.  Like a board it is.

Try a carrot stick, or Step up to the St Croix LT, they both have the split grips. As for a good rod, I love my avid and I am sure the LT is just a step up with split grip.

The Shimano Cumara is the best hands down rod for this purpose.  Now all these people will jump on the Lomis bandwagon but they have not fished a Cumara.  You will love it and so would they.

I will not use a Carrot due to my brother's crappin' out on him in the first month! I have used a Cumara and i liked it but the blank is just so thin it makes me nervous, LOL!!! The Kistler is a bit out of my price range! I need a broomstick with a reel seat i guess, LOL!

Powell 705c or a Falcon head turnner.

The Powell 705C is the rod i am selling now(mentioned in the original post)! I love the rod but it is too flimsy at the tip. Way over rated IMO!!

Check out ALX rods. My partner uses them and he loves them, its a custom rod so you can get whatever you want. Also hes been experimenting with blanks from different types of rods (like Steelhead and other trout and musky blanks) to build his rods.

Not sure about Powell, but the Dobyns 705c has one hell of a tip. Great worm rod, if you're looking for something tough. I use 733 and 734 for all my worming needs, I leave the 5 powers for jigs.

Just a thought, hope you don't take this as an insult, but when I heard flimsy, I thought maybe you had the 705cb? Cause the Dobyns 705 is nothing flimsy at all.

Good luck.

Me to if you dont have any rods in your boat tomorrow it wasnt me...

I use a dobyns 705dx,dobyns gen 2 704 and a dobyns gen 2 765 for jigs.Dobyns 703 and 704 for some worms.

Well...a Daiwa Zillion would cure your 'floppy tip' problems. Take your current fishing rod and feed it 9 *s....now you have a Zillion. Take your pick of length....they are all extremely fast. MH=H though...seriously.

I'm not on the bandwagon with split grips, but I do have a Dobyns

Champion Series 683C. Brokeju's advice is right on the money,

the 705C is exactly what you are looking for.

8-)

Hey Dink whisperer

What was it you didn't like about the All Star, I plan on buying one in the near future when I get the cash so I'm interested in what you thought, is it just you're personal preference or did you find it lacking in a specific area??

That is very weird man! I was under the impression that Powell and Dobyns where almost identical in power/action ratings? I just don't understand how the Powell 705C is rated Mag Heavy/Extra Fast when it has less action and power than my MH/F Mojo!?! It's a shame because i really like the rod too. I am at a loss for ideas right now! I have been through so many rods that claim Heavy/Fast that i am scared to order another guys!!!! >:)

Do you think that maybe i just expect/want too much from a rod? All my research shows that Powell and Dobyns are identical in power/action. If that is so and you find it to be very powerful and have a stiff tip than it's just me!

Sounds like you should start looking at Musky rods.

Sounds like you should start looking at Musky rods.

I actually did but they where a little too much power for me, LOL!!!  ;D

I know a guy that uses a Salmon rod for worms, although it's a 8' spinnin rod.

How about a St. Croix LTBC73XHF ?? :-?

I like my Gen 1 Dobyns 704C (H, XF) and my Daiwa Zillion 6'9" (MH, XF)

But like The_Natural said, the Zillions are underrated. MH does = H.  And they make a 7' MH that may better suit your needs.

I played with a Kistler Magnesium TS jig n toad rod at BPS today that was pretty sweet! I might get that one.

if you dont like the cumara you might want to think about the zillion or get a Loomis Mossyback. Also Fenwick makes a Pitchin Stick in around the size you are ooking for in the Elite rod's.
