swim bait reel?

Featured Replies

What would be recommended ratio for a reel for a swim bait rod?  Not sure if 7.1:1 would be better or if 6.4:1.  I don't fish a lot of swim baits but am thinking of looking into a set up in the near future.  Was thinking of pairing it with the Powell 7'6" Mag-Hvy 766.  That was I can have a heavier flipping rod as well as a solid set up for swim baits with an up to 2oz rating.  I looked at matlures, the hard gills are just under 2oz so I figured it would be a good set up.

Shimano 300/301 Cardiff

Shimano 300/301 Curado

Both will handle lures under 2 oz effortlessly.

I am not a Shimano fan by any means, but the Cardiff is a good reel.

For what you listed, I'd consider the Revo Winch.  I certainly wouldn't want a high speed reel for swimbaits.  (I actually use a winch for a lot of swimbaits)

I would not get anything higher than a 6.X.1 reel.  Most swimbaits you want to work slow, so having a 7.X.1 reel is pointless.  With that said, the cardiffs are a pretty solid reel for the money.  I've also heard good things about the Luna.  I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

I'll probably be looking in the 150-200 range for the reel to pair up with that rod.

Probably look at something in the 5.x.1 range possibly. I like the AG reels, have a revo stx now,  just that the 5.x.1 may be to low of a gear ratio for me to use this rod for dual purpose for heavy flipping.

I wouldnt, based soley on the fact you mentioned the Hard Gill as the chosen swimbait.

The way I fish the bluegill, a 5.X:1 reel feels like I am getting worn out.  Soft plastic baits are another story altogether though....

I still think that either the Cardiff or Curado would be perfect.  Probably wouldnt do bad with the Winch, but I dont own one so can't really comment.

You can find a 300 Curado D or E for under 200.  Both reels have the HEG, which is a nice feature.

Calcutta 200GTB thats what i have and love it. I can cast a mile.

Revo Toro 50-HS, they can be found on ebay for around $160-180

My recommendation exactly! My bro has one and it holds some line man! But since it will pull double duty as a flippin' reel the Revo Winch would go good too!

I'm using the Curado 301E and have been very happy with its performance.

I use a Calcutta 300TE or a Curado 300D.  I use the Curado more because I like the LP feel.

I got my Curado last summer for less than a $100 at a Cabelas bargain cave sale.
