I guess Quantum deserves it rep..

Featured Replies

Some of you know I bought a Quantum Accurist the other day. Well I was tossing around a 1/2oz practice plug today, just trying to get more distance and accuracy. Well on the retrieve, the line guide jammed up, and the reel starts to make the most horrible, grinding, clicking noise, and now the line guide won't move. I hope I just got a bad reel, because I really liked it. I sure hope Academy will exchange it...

No worries. All the retrailers are familiar with the

Quantum replacement policy.

  ::)

Just exchange the reel for another one.  Every reel a company makes can't be perfect.

Yes roadwarrior, even Shimano.

::)

Its never fun when you have a bad experience with equipment. I personally try not to pass judgment on a company based on one bad product. My first shimano reel had to be sent back to the store because of a grinding noise and I've since owned many shimano's without another issue.

They all make lemons sometimes.

They all can't be gems but my Accurist is working fine after a good year of usage with no problems.

I still have a few 1st gen Accurists that I still use and they work as well now as they did then. As others have said, there's lemons out there from all the companies.

Sounds like the level wind drive gear probably stripped some teeth.  I had an old older accurist that had a similar problem.  The gear was plastic.  The part was unavailable back then.  That was my biggest complaint with Quantum (parts availability on fairly new reels) besides the finishes which just don't hold up.

I've got two Quantums and they work just fine.  No issues whatsoever.  Yeah the finishes are fading a bit, but I didn't buy the reels to look at them.

A long problem with Quantum reels isn't so much that the finish fades or overly wears, it's that the finish begins flaking badly or peeling off the reel and looks more like a cancer, in an unusually short period of time as compared to other reel brands. Otherwise they're a competent reel though I think they're overpriced.

FWIW, out of roughly a dozen baitcasters and at least 9 spinning reels, the only reel to give me problems right out of the box was a Citica 200E.

The worst reel I have ever had for a shoddy finish was a Team Diawa TD-S.  The finish looked like it had severe boat rash within 2 trips.  That was years ago before I understood that I should have returned it.  It also hasn't held up as well as my other brands so I think I got a lemon from the word 'go' on that one.  It just goes to show that no company is immune to producing a sub par reel.

I've been using quantum rods and reels for about 20 yrs and never had a problem with any of them.

I know weird concept huh?  Buy something for it's usability not its aesthetics?  Who would do that?

That is my new favorite comment to date. ;D ;D

Why would you give up aesthetics when you can

have it all? Other brands have built a reputation

for performing flawlessly over time AND retaining

their "new in box" appearance.

"Strong, smooth, silent and reliant."

That's how I roll.

Is that (aesthetics) a disease ?

I just bought a Catalyst, so far I've used it twice and the paint's still on it and it hasn't exploded or anything yet. ;D

That's cool, but at least with Quantum I know an American made my stuff. If that doesn't entice you, then the Ports of Entry aren't just for entry.

You're still safe for a while.  Takes at least 5 trip for them to blow up in your hands.   :)

I don't know what Quantum equipment you are buying but I haven't seen an American made Quantum product a decade or more.
