i just recently bought a shimano calais and am wondering if it is dumb to use it for fresh and saltwater.  it says that it is saltwater rated but still...  Do yall think it will ruin the reel if i saltwater fish every now and then with it?

If I spent that much on a reel I wouldn't allow it within 50 miles of saltwater.  ;D

rinse it with freshwater like you would after any outing in saltwater , and it should be fine.

you have a good point about not going near saltwater lol, i may take that advice because i cannot afford to fix this thing lol

You started out looking for a crankbait reel which the APV would do the job. If you are looking for a Salt Water version than you should have bought the ASV.

ill be fishing freshwater lakes 99% of the time.  but i may goto the beach every now and then

No problem, rinse it after use ( even though I would think it twice before fishing in saltwater with it ) . There used to be a Calais Mg, the reel was not made from magnesium, the spool was magnesium and it was not saltwater safe, it 's no longer made.

For years that reel has been the flagship low profile Shimano. It is built like a tank with high end anti rust bearings. Rinse it off when done fishing in the salt, have it professionally cleaned every now and then, and it will out live all of us. 8-)

Personally I wouldn't use it at the beach all that sand and salt water! Hell no, I would just buy a cheap set up from walmart or some other store and take that to the beach

Ugly sticks are good for salt water, my dad has one that is older than me and he still takes it fishing and still performs great

I would have no fear in using the reel in saltwater, however I don't believe it's a good choice.  It would be ok for inshore use from a boat, but as mentioned sand is your worst enemy.  The only conventional reels I see used in saltwater are for trolling, drifting, pier fishing and for beach use something like a senator 4/0, not a low profile b/c.  A b/c would be fine for fishing seawalls on the ICW where there are no sand concerns.  If it were me and for only occasional use I would buy something like a Penn Captiva combo, 4 or 5000 reel, 7'10/20 rod.  Lighter than the ugly stick, although "uglies" are quite popular for beach use.

I'm an everyday saltwater fisherman, that's my advice.

I would get a system dedicated for salt and use just that...

If you want to fish salt water, buy a Penn reel. I don't fish salt very often but I have 2 Penn reels that are really built for sw. I would never use my fresh water gear for salt. It's not a good idea.

I have the 200DC model.  Love it.  I fish fresh water up here in Richmond, VA, but fish for puppydrum, trout, etc. wading down at our summer vacation home in Buxton, NC in the sound.  I've fished it down there wading while it was raining sideways.  I take care of it as best I can, but I have yet to send it in to get cleaned.  Hasn't skipped a beat.  Was nervous prior, but I'm using it for all its worth now.

im currently using three shimano curado d's for saltwater only.

they are fine. i have a quantum spinning reel that is lasting like a champ mechanically, though cosmetically its a bit worn.

i have a cardiff on a 6'7 ugly stick that i take out for big fish. (cobia,blues and "hopefully" a tarpon one day.)

all of these reels are fresh water reels that were deemed "suitable" for saltwater use though not specifically made for saltwater.

funny... now that i have the plastic curados, for free i might add..., the only saltwater specific reel i have- a quantum accurist pts, has been re-assigned to freshwater use. lol.

I fish anywhere I can, mostly out in the West End of Richmond on some local farm ponds, a few golf courses, and the James River.  Been fishing the Greenbrier lately as we purchased a place on it a little while ago.  Good SM and Musky...yet to tie into one of those though.  How about yourself?

im about to start fishing chesdin, i really wanna take my jon boat on the james this spring so ill probably do that. and then the highlands lake.  i only fish for largemouth so far.
