Ultimate All Purpose Combo?!

Featured Replies

6'6" MH/F or M/F graphite rod, 6.x:1 baitcast reel, 12lb line of choice

x2 except I would prefer a 7' rod

What I want: MB783 GLX with split grip, no foregrip and spiral wrapped TiSic guides with a Core51 and 15lb FC

What I have: Powell 683C with Curado 201E7

Don

If I were to be limited to only one baitcasting combo I might cry. But I would think I would want a 7' MH with a fast taper and good backbone. I have used one for just about every application at one time or another. I would spool it with 15lb 100% flourocarbon.

I would go with dobyns 704 with a core 100 mg.....! I would go with like 30lb braid and just tie leaders depending on application.

What would be your ideal, all-purpose baitcasting combo?!

I personally don't have an opinion on the 'ideal' all-purpose combo. I recently asked the same question after coming back from fishing with a relative while in Florida...except about all-purpose bass rods. Grew up with spinning reels, but wasn't happy with the size needed for heavier lines. My reaction was to switch to baitcasting equipment.

The resulting consensus was a 6'6" to 7' MH with a fast tip. I bought a 7 footer. (Man does it seem long after using my ultralight spinning equipment!) Didn't think to ask about an all-purpose bass reel. Just seemed to make sense to go the middle route for the retrieve ratio, and buy the best one I could afford. In my case that was the Daiwa Fuego L on closeout. A $229 reel for $145 was too good to pass up.

Only time will tell if I made the right choices. Am hoping to try the combo on water next weekend.

I agree. I have a 744 and it seems like the 4 powered Dobyns can handle most anything.

rod - 6'6" or 7' , med or MH, fast

reel - low profile, 6 or 7 gear ratio

my all purpose combo is a mbr783 with curado 201E7. my ideal combo would prob have a $500 dollar reel on it. ;)

Mine has just become a Kistler LTX 6'9" MH.  Reel will be either a Chronarch 51Mg or Browning Midas.

x3, but with a 6'9" to 6'10" rod.

Such an animal doesn't exist for me.

Shimano Curado 200e7, 7.1:1 gear ratio. Hey, I can always slow down, ;)

St. Croix Mojo Bass 6'6" Medium action rod.

12lb Stren original clear/blue mono.

This would work for anything I get myself into when it comes to bass fishing.

Steez (JDM wiley) 7' MH rod w/ Steez 100HA reel

or

G.Loomis GLX MBR842 7' MH rod w/ Steez 100HA reel

G.Loomis GLX MBR842 7' MH rod w/ Steez 100HA reel

Hmm...

On your recommendation, I matched my

842 with the Core 50MG7. It's a very nice

combination!

St. Croix LTCB68MXF/Shimano Curado 200E7. This combo would work very well with just about any bait/rig except Deep cranks or pitch/flip heavy cover. The lite tip is great for weightless baits but has the backbone to handle other baits. You may want to use different lines for some baits thuogh.
