Losing lures

Recommended Posts

Just got back from fishing. I'm pretty new to expensive lures , but this winter I bought a bunch of lucky craft, megabass etc. Well I through out the aurora gold 78sp and within a couple casts caught a largemouth. I checked the line then cast again and hooked another one I set the hook and fought for a few seconds then snap. Looked at the line seems to be broke at the knot. That's one expensive lure I lost especially in Canada. Next thing I know the fish jumps about ten feet out and it was huge. I was using 12lb trilene xl and kistler 7' M. I feel like my whole day is ruined. :'(

Trilene XL stinks, period. Brittle stuff that degrades fast in sunglight. Switch to original stren or P - Line CX Premium. Yo zuri hybrid ultrasoft gets good reviews too. P - Line CXX premium is the best heavy cover line around, but needs some KVD line and lure to be more manageable.

Hmm, while I feel for you. Try losing about 150.00 worth of swmbaits in about 2 months...and see how you'd feel.. ;)

It's all part of the game..at least, that's what I keep telling myself.. ;D

I don't agree that Trilene XL stinks. Like any other line, it has pluses and minuses. I used it on and off for many years and never had any particular problem. I think you'd be better served by examining what might have gone wrong, as opposed to just assuming it was the line.

If you insist on changing lines, I do agree that Original Stren is a good line. I've never used P-Line.

All of those city lakes have rules against wading, swiming, and such..So I couldn't get em if I wanted to. And, they were to far out to use a lure retriver..

Did you tie directly to the split ring, or to a snap?

You're better off using a snap with split rings.

I tied to a snap and removed the split ring is it possible that the fish I just caught streched the line even though it was only small, or is there a wrong way to tie a palomar knot. Maybe it just swallowed the lure so deep that it's teeth cut the line because I was letting it pause for about 10 seconds. Who knows these are the things you try to figure out so that it doesn't happen again. ( $150 in swimbaits yeah that sucks)

You waited 10 seconds after the bass hit your lure, until you set the hook/started reeling..?

I lose something almost every time I fish, way it goes.

I doubt trilene xl is the the problem, I've use trilene xl on much more formidable species

;D If that were the case, they wouldn't still be selling it after 50 years. ;D

If your day was ruined because you lost an expensive lure don't use them , because if you fish a lot , you're going to loose a lot more.

I 've fished Trilene XL for more than 2 decades and even thoufgh it 's a great very limp line it 's abrassion resistance is near zero so I don 't fish it in abrassive environments because of that, you will loose a lot of lures when fishing with it if you don 't check it ofenlty, any nick will cause the line to break easily under tension.

I think a lot of us go through a "growing stage" when we start throwing $15 hard baits.  You don't throw them in cover or work them like you do a $5 crankbait.  Guess what?  You don't lose them because you aren't throwing them where the fish live.  Look, if you are getting bites, bouncing baits off cover, and fishing them in gnarly stuff where the big boys live, you are going to lose a lure occasionally.  Resign yourself to the inevitable.

I fish a quarry with lots sharp rocks and misc. timber & debris on the bottom.  I plan on losing a couple baits per hour.  If I use deeper moving baits, or bottom baits with lead I'm lucky to get 2 or 3 casts before getting permanently wedged in-between rocks.  I don't fish a lot or premium baits and when I see a closeout, I buy a bunch.

I found that by switching to 12# copoly such as Gamma or McCoy, I was able to save more baits due to their greater strength over mono.  (I started with Trilene XL).
