Core vs. Chronarch for Frogs

Featured Replies

I am looking at getting either a Core 100MgFV or a Chronarch D7 for hollow body frog fishing.  The obvious advantage of the Core is the light weight and the obvious advantage of the Chronarch is the lower price.  What I am wondering is which reel would have the durability to handle pulling in a 3 lb. bass along with 10 lbs. of slop, which would be the deciding factor.  Please let me know of your experience with either reel.  Thanks.

The Core has another thing the Chronarch doesn 't, Instagage System.

On the durability issue, some could say that cuz the gears in the Core are aluminum then probably it will last less, I look at that the same way as I look when somebody says that aluminum/steel/brass ( because it 's metal ) is stronger or longer lasting than carbon fiber. Materials have evolved a lot so now that area of durability/strength has become very blurry.

So, weight/price aside, besides froggin, you think you can make good use and frequent use of the Instagage system ? I say because my old Abus have flipping switch which I don 't use ( heck, don 't even remeber it 's there when I 'm flipping ) so if you 're not going to make use of the feature why spend 80 dollars more .

Good points Raul.  As far as the gears in the Core 100 MgFV, I think I read that model has brass gears and the 100Mg and 50mg have the aluminum ones (which would explain part of the extra weight the 100MgFV has over the 100Mg).

I've hauled in five fish over 8.5lbs. this year with my Core reels. Three of them were accompanied by a healthy chunk of salad and they did quite well. Mine are the 50's though. The Core and Chronarch are the finest quality reels and I'm sure you would be happy with either one. I can't give you any feedback as far as durability because I got my first Core (bought two more immediately after)about 5-6 months ago but I had a Chronarch for 16 or 17 years and it was still super smooth and tight. Both felt great to me but I wanted the weight savings and am glad I did, the weight difference really increases a rod's sensitivity.

Go to the store, get them to put both on rods, and see which you like. Then, go home and order it on ebay to save $60-70 lol

My question to myself would be "do I want black or white/silver"

The Core 100MgFV has brass gears, unlike other Cores which have aluminum gears.

I use my Core 100MgFV almost exclusively for frogs and it is stellar in this role. I have it spooled with 50# braid.

I happen to love the Instagage feature.  When I'm pitching, I like being able to reengage the reel before I switch hands.

For what its worth, the Daiwa Zillion is a great frog reel.  It is robust and has a thumbar you can reengage simply by pushing up on it.   That feature is very valuable to me.

the Core 100MgFV also has the oversized power handle

Having had both reels, the Chronarch is the beefier of the two reels.

Hands down The Chronarch.  However.....The Zillion beats both in my opinion.

Thanks for all the opinions guys.

I currently have the Zillion on my frog rod, but I am not a big fan of it.  I don't like how much it weighs, which is why I am looking at the Chronarch and Core.

I hear that alot about the Zillion.  If you want something lighter, try a deep spool hi speed Steez.  personally I use a Japanese market Zillion HLC for my frog set up.  That reel can cast a country mile.

hmmm...I never really thought of a Steez for the job.  For some reason, i just assumed the Steez wouldn't have the power to handle the abuse of pulling fish out of heavy slop that this techniques requires.  May have to look into that as well.  Thanks RedlineRobert!

I use the Chronarch for my froggin..works just dandy.. ;)

Are you comparing the Chronarch 100D to the Core 50 or the Core 100MGFV?

Frankly the 100MGFV is a tank and every bit as stout as my Chronarch...

i used a core three years ago for a season.for the last two years i have been using a steez 100 for my frog fishin.i couldnt use  anything else now.frog fishing is my fav way to fish.so i tried all different reels to find the "one" for me.

steez wins, holds up fine.tough little reel and well make you smile how far it will launch a spro.

i liked the core and i think it casted as far, just not as smooth and it wasnt as comfortable to hold all day.

big hands go core

smaller hands go steez.
