Tomorrow im going out to get some new jigs and trailers and was wondering what I should get to fish the pre spawn. LA st time I went i bought uncle joshes porks but they were too thick to even get on the hook so I doubt ill get those again. Also whats a good type of jig and size.

And what are all of the type of jigs you can use?

Just remember that since the water temp is slightly cold, the fish will more than likely hit a small lure. I would go with either a 1/8 or a 1/4 ounce jig. The colors I would choose to be somewhere close to natural crayfish colors (Red/Black, Red/Orange/Black, etc.) and the trailer I would use either the tail end of a Hula Grub or any plastic that resembles the front portion of a crawfish.

For example: Craw Chunks , Poor Boys Bait's Craw Daddy .

I personally stick with my own home made jig trailer 3.5" craw-tails. I got the mold and plastic from Barlow's Tackle.

You can't go wrong tossing a Tru-Tungsten Jason Quinn jig or a Gman custom made jig paired with any color Zoom Super Chunk.

I like Booyah jigs with Yum trailers, the chunk, crawbug, and craw papi are personal favorites

I ordered some Karu Jigs, but have not had the chance to use them. However, they are very high quality and cant wait to use them!

Add a booyah boo jig in like 1/4.

Assalt makes some pretty good rubber jig too (The Cobra I think) I love it, don't remember the name... plus I'm not sure they are still selling it.

LC makes the Glass killer which is my number one jig when flippin' grass with a baby brush hog as trailer, but I think LC USA does not sell the jig (not sure though) !

As trailers I mainly use Zoom super chunk, Zoom Brush hog and Zomm Super Speed Craw..... love them Zoom !  

Like JohnJ said, the water is pretty cold so, I tend to use smaller size baits. I'd go with 1/16oz-1/4oz tops if your planning to fish them recently. Although im fishing areas of water that are no more then 5 feet deep mostly.

For Jigs I like Booyah Jigs, especially Booyah Baby Boos. I like strike king bitsybugs (they aren't quality, but they still catch fish, inexpensive so you can throw em around cover with no worries). I also like Terminator Jigs, particularly their finesse Jigs. For colors I use Black/blue, Black, Watermelon Red, Greenpumpkin Red, Brown/purple, Brown/green, Brown/black/green, Brown. Any of those colors seem to work, the Black, I use in muddy water, and the black/blue you can pretty much get bit with anywhere, anytime.

For trailers I like Yum Chunks, in 2.75 inch for my smaller jigs and 3.5 inch for my larger jigs. Paca Chunks are great too, amazing action, but their claws rip off fairly easy which is why my fav is still the Yum Chunks. GYCB Hula Grubs I like, for when im fishing the jig a little quicker then normal. Zoom Super Chunks are pretty good too. Also a cut in half Berkley Chigger Craw is a pretty good substitute to the Yum Chunks/Zoom Super Chunks. Remember to match the color of the trailer to the color of the jig. If your using a black/blue jig, use a black/blue trailer etc. At times I'll change a black jig to a black/blue by adding a black/blue trailer. Although I guess there is always time to experiment, anyway happy shopping 8-).

There are several types / styles of jigs for different presentations and depths, so I'll just outline here my "go-to" jigs for each type:

Finesse jigs- SK Bitsy Flip in 1/4 oz (Watermelon or black) with Zoom Super Chunk, Jr.

Deep Finesse Jig- Jewell heavy Eakins Jig in 7/16 oz with a Zoom Little Critter Craw

Flippin Jigs- Tournament Force web-site jigs (Arkie style head) or Oldham's screw lock in 3-8 or 1/2 (Pumpkin w/ Green flake or black n blue) with Zoom Super Chunk trailer.

Football Jig- Jewel Jig by Mike McLelland in 1/2 or 3/4 in same two basic colrs as the flipping jigs above. For trailer, I prefer a Zoom Speed Craw.

Swim Jig- Outkast Tackle Pro Swim Jig in 1/4 oz with single tail grub trailer.

Grass punching jig- All Terrain Tackle Scott Martin Grassmaster jig in Watermlon Red or Black 'n blue with a Zoom Speed Craw trailer to match.

My guess is that you are looking for a good, general purpose casting or flippin jig, so I'd go with something in 3/8 to 1/2 oz in two basic colors (one green and one black n blue), and match it with a Zoom Super Chunk Trailer. Just make sure if you buy a "production", mass produced jig, that they use a good quality jig hook, like a Mustad Ultra Point. If you just want to get a bunch of bites on a jig to gain confidence, I'd recommend the Bitsy Bug.

Strike King Pro Mode jigs are pretty good. As far as trailers go, Paca Chunks are great. I stopped using Uncle Josh last summer. I love the action of real pork but they are a pain in the @#$ to get on/off the hook.

I too agree,you can't go wrong with the Paca chunks, GREAT action.Also look at the Eakins jigs they are very good also.

Jig:  Harshman's Custom Baits (Poison Tail)  I found that these jigs go through the rip rap better than most jig heads I have fished before.  Plus he is a nice guy who will work with you on the skirting.  Just tell him what you want and he can make it happen pretty much.  He bought a new color of skirting just for my jigs.  

Trailer  I typically use Powerbait Chigger Craws or if I want something smaller I go with the Yum Chunks (2-3/4").
