It'll be the perfect rod for you. You'll enjoy everything about it, because you chose everything, where as a factory rod you may need to compromise a little.

Indeed and if you work with a pro rod maker they will certainly steer you in the right direction.

I have 4 customs with a 5th on the way...

Pro's:

Your mind (and wallet) are the limit...you get just what you want...extended/cut blank, spiral wrapped, grips, guides, reel seat, winding checks etc...

Usually lighter than off the rack rods

Con's:

Price...good stuff's not cheap

Time...may take a long time...depending on availability of blank and/or components (imports etc...)

Warranty...not important too me...but talk with the builder you have in mind...

Lots of great off the rack rods...but there is something special about having a custom built rod!

One of the biggest misconceptions about custom rods is that they are out of reach for the average angler's budget. Nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone considering a production rod over $200 should at least consider a custom and I've done some nice build for far less. Factories just can't do the precision guide placement, fit and finish and fine tuning that a custom builder can do. Decorative grips, trim, thread work etc is labor intensive and often what makes custom builds appear to be extravagantly priced but that's all optional. As far as warranties go, many blank suppliers warranty their product and I guarantee our work. You won't save money by a custom build, but you'll get more bang for your buck.

I've selected the blank & components and purchased 2 custom rods.

They are worth every dollar !

Pros:

They fish better than my high end Steez and GLoomis GLX rods.

I get exactly what I want in a fishing rod (blank, reel seat, guides. grip)

Price could be competitive if you stick to the basics.

Cons:

Long wait times for blank and components.

Very expensive if you go high end.

If warranty is a big issue then I dont receommend a custom. The blank mfg may warranty the blank but you still have to deal with the cost of the rebuild and replacement components.

Thanks guys

I don't use as high end of gear as most of you. Mostly kistler LTA's and Argon rods. Looking for a 7'10 pitchin stick 3/16 to 1 ounce, 10#- 20# line. Not Telescopic don't care for them at all.

A rod that has nice balance with a Revo winch on it.(Favorite Reel for Pitchin)

Something sensitive yet with enough backbone to pull them out of grass and brush. >:o

I'm pretty exited about working with DVT on the project. :D

I have two and I love both of them.  It was fun to work with the builder to decide what colors and components to use.  It was well worth the wait and the money.  I never would have spent that much on one from a store, but kowing they were made just for me justified it.

Pros:

"Pride of ownership" is HUGE!

"Bling-bling" is all about you.

Some components are only availble

custom, e.g., gold guides.

"Quality control, e.g., assured alignment of guides on the spine.

Cons:

Many proprietary blanks are not available, e.g.,

G. Loomis GLX and NRX.

As already mentioned, warranty issues.

Although no longer being offered, there are quite few G. Loomis blanks still on close out. And at the risk of suffering the wrath of "The Posse" there are other very high quality blanks out there.  :D

Lets not forget that Gary Loomis has opened the new blank company called NFC (North Fork Composites), there are some very high quality blanks coming from him again.....

Thanks Guys

Good stuff as always!! :D

I just had a new cranking stick made from larry over at g-blanks. i'm very impressed. it's a 7'6" m/h moderate fast with split eva grips and a fully exposed reel seat like a carrot stix and micro guides. price was 160 to my door and I got it in a little over 2 weeks. I tried it out @ the lake the other day and I can darn near spool my curado e-5 with a 1/2 oz trap. It's got a good parabolic bend to it when using a deep diver like a dd22 but still has plenty of backbone. I think it's a rainshadow blank
