Featured Replies

Did you try to punch any?

No, the friend I took has never punched before so we fished the outside line. I just wanted him to catch a few fish.

Had 30lbs today and my dad had 14lbs in our club tournament. Our best 5 combined was 33lbs. I had 3 fish between 7- 10lbs jump off. My big fish i caught was 9.5lbs.  Lots of tournaments coming up, but

  • Well two days in & only 3 fish ?   But one was tagged BassCashBash which I was registered in, it won me a 2019 Dodge Ram!

I thought it would be appropriate to bump this thread after hearing the bad news of @Catt's passing.  I don't fish Toledo Bend but this is a very interesting read for anyone.  I know Tommy took a lot

Gotcha. Glad y'all caught a few. The punch bite should just be getting better and better right now!

Ya'll punching deep grass edges or mats?  What weight for the deep grass.  I've only punched the mats so I usually use 1 to 1.5 oz.

I use 1.5oz hack attack jigs normally. I punch both, but rather punch deep edges.

Thank You!! I'll be up there this weekend.

Good luck and let us know how you do. If you punch, look for deep grass points close to channel swings.

No don't tell the bass!

I'm often chastised by some on this site that a jig is an ineffective tool for punching grass.

I just grin & wink. ;)

The wind, the wind, the naughty wind!  ;)

I spent Saturday and Sunday in Housen and yes the wind was blowin. Finally able to get my son and his buddy up to the lake for a day or two. We started off on the outside edge of the grass line and was catching a few but thick grass and wind was more than two 12 year olds could handle. We move to the back of hurricane throwing flukes and t-rigs. We caught a few but the size was not as good as we were catching out deeper. All in all it was a great weekend with two fine young anglers. They were planning their next trip before we were on the road good headed home. Great time great memories.....take a kid, or two, fishing!

Mard928, Hurricane...west side from the mouth to about midway then the east side.

After 1 1/2 dozen personal messages, text, & e-mails let's address lake level.

Yea it's @ 168 & dropping & no it ain't a concern!

It's November...168 is right on schedule!

This is completely normal ;)

Has the lower lake level made hydrilla mats more visible/matted?

For punching grass down south in the clearer water, do y'all normally stick to watermelon type colors or will the black/blue colors work also?

The grass is matted in a lot of areas. I like to punch with a sun perch looking jig. I believe the bigger fish key in on bream in that grass.

Thanks BF. Heading up anytime soon? I'm headed up Saturday morning & will be there most of the week. Planning to trailer south and try some punching.

As much as I don't like punching I guess I'll be doing some of it around six mile and housen.

I won't be back for a little while. I'm heading up to Arkansas Saturday to fish the Basscat championship, then need to start learning Rayburn for the Texas Team Trail in January.

Good luck man. Don't forget the 8 lb flouro! I hear that clear water is tough.

Yea, I don't think I'll be punching with 65lb braid up there lol...I wasted about $300 on junk that I'll never fish again once I get back. Wiggle warts, Ned rigs, jigging spoons, green crawfish cranks, ect. It's gonna be cold too!!

Y'all hear anything about an 11# caught in the mouth of Lowe's Creek?

Not yesterday, I'm up here till Wednesday, graphed lots of fish deeper, only small ones on the drop shot. A guy at the ramp said they caught 20 keepers shallow on flukes and senkos, maybe they moved up with the cold front, no punching fish, no top water fish, trigs and drop shot, no Crankin fish either.....fished housen and six mile

Fished Pirates and Housen Saturday with the same results Shaneus....Threw spinnerbaits early and went to Trigs and jigs around 8 am on outside edge and punching matt with little success.  I graphed some of my traditional spots (main lake near creek or river) and found very little bass or bait activity.  I did graph a large school of bait in around 35 fow in a creek channel with what looked like whites around it, could not get them to bite either.  Finally after wearing my 12 year old out punching grass we transitioned to flukes, senkos and waky over and on the edge of the grass line.  Caught two short fish...saw some bait but little feeding activity.....Just wasn't my day.

Friend of mine was able to catch 3 keepers on spinnerbait and 2 on Jig...biggest around 4#....Crazy thing is he was within talking distance and we nearly scratched..

On a positive note spent about 11 hours on the water with my favorit fishing partner....and as tough as it was he had a blast!!!  Once we were home and unpacked he was on Youtube looking up punching grass techniques on youtube....he is addicted.

I've gotten reports from the main lake structure near river or creeks & major creeks like 944, Mill in Lowe's, & Caney.

Spinner baits, Traps, T-rigs 1/4 oz, & Jigs ;)

Fished Sunday pm and all day Monday. Water temp is 66-68 degrees and water is extremely clear. Afternoon bite Sunday was decent. Caught 8 and my Dad broke off about a 7 lb'er in Hausen Flats fishing edge of hydrilla in 15 ft. on Tx. Rig worm. The other 8 were all under 2 lbs. Monday was one of our worst days ever. Fished all day and only boated 4 fish. We have friends fishing with us and they did the same. The early morning bite was awful - should have slept in :) Threw Yellow Magic and white spinner baits early, then Tx-rigged worms, jig-n-craw, and rattle traps during day. Never could find a consistent pattern or bite. Fishing Hausen Flats, mouth of Hurricane, mouth of Six Mile, and smaller coves near Fox's Lodge. We are staying at Fin-N-Feather. One of our better fish was messing around next to the boat ramp....lol.

Fishing pre-front Tuesday morning before heading back to Dallas. Hopefully we will find some fish, but if not, it's still good times at the Bend with my Dad and friends.
