Yes I have ;)

Hydrilla verticillata, Eurasian watermilfoil, & Coontail/Hornwort will generally stop growing in depths of 15-18'.

"Do you think the bass go deeper, suspend over deep water, or bury up in the cover when the sun gets up? are you fishing a topwater early?"

The bigger bass do all three!

We are targeting the breakline used by the bass to move back & forth between their deep water homes & feeding areas.

We are fishing nowhere near a bank & a topwater rods aint on our decks

Had 30lbs today and my dad had 14lbs in our club tournament. Our best 5 combined was 33lbs. I had 3 fish between 7- 10lbs jump off. My big fish i caught was 9.5lbs.  Lots of tournaments coming up, but

  • Well two days in & only 3 fish ?   But one was tagged BassCashBash which I was registered in, it won me a 2019 Dodge Ram!

I thought it would be appropriate to bump this thread after hearing the bad news of @Catt's passing.  I don't fish Toledo Bend but this is a very interesting read for anyone.  I know Tommy took a lot

"will generally stop growing in depths of 15-18'",,,how tall would this grass be at it's edge? perhaps i'm overlooking it on my sonar,,thinking the edge is somewhat shallower..

With the exception of the spawning season, the “outer” weed-line (alias deep weed-line) supports the lion’s share of lunker bass.

Start at the "outer" weed/grass line which by the way is not the well defined wall where the matted weed/grass stops. The "outer" weed/grass line can be located 15 to 25 yds away from the mat itself and can be found with your electronics.

Follow the contour of this "outer" weed/grass line casting ahead of the boat, towards the matted grass, and towards the deeper water while progressively work your way up to the matted grass.

In short you're fan casting the area ahead of the boat!

If the grass bed is off shore you will want to circle the bed, if it's shore line related start at one end work to the other and repeat progressively working towards the mat.

Once you come in contact with bass drop a buoy, drop anchor, mark a GPS and work this area in an ever growing circle.

There are 10s of thousands of grass beds on Toledo Bend each one varies depending on grass type, bottom composition, light penetration, proximity to deep water and so on.

Each should be fished as an individual because they are!

When selecting a grass bed to fish I first look at the topography where the bed is located, second I try to determine if the area has timber/brush. Many anglers look only at the bed itself fishing either the outer contour or the mat itself. Knowing what's under the mat is just as important if not more important that the mat itself.

Fishing Report for 4/13-15

We got to the lake around 6pm and headed out to Jessie Lowe and caught 6 on C-Rigged watermelon red flukes in 8 to 12ft of water. Sat morning I fished a tournament at Sam Rayburn and placed third. After the tournament we headed back to the Big Pond and caught anouther 5 fish on the same pattern in Jessie Lowe. Sunday we fished until noon using the same pattern and landed 7 more. Nothing big, a few dinks mixed in, but all most were good quality 2 to 3 pd fish. All the fish were holding in grass. If you can find the grass you will catch some fish.

Great job!!!

Every thing I've heard being caught (of any size anyway) has been around grass; the technique doesn't matter as long as it involves grass

if contact is made and it is a short fish, do you still target the imediate area looking for more fish or do you move on, looking for a school of bigger fish? i've heard same size will be together but i've also heard you might have to go thru the little ones to get bigger bites.

I personally don't buy into the theroy of "same size will be together" because I've caught a 14" bass on one cast & a kicker bass on the next. The only way to prove it to yourself is to work the area in an ever growing circle. Now there are some grass beds/structure known for holding tight-eyes & some are known for holding kicker bass but in each there are exceptions to the rules which to me proves there are no rules in bass fishing.

I'll repeat, if y'all aint using Acme Mapping 2.0 y'all are making a huge mistake!

Their satellite imagery has updated again showing not only shoreline structure but shallow water structure & massave weed beds

N 31.29355 W 93.71888, this is a grass flat west of Hurricane bayou, notice the break in the middle & what appears to be a logging road with ruts to the east of it.

N 31.23499 W 93.65716, notice the underwater structure & grass when zoomed in, this is where Rojas won the Elite tournmament!

Catt

Y’all need to look @ the 1215 area on Acme Mapper ;)

I do the QC work for the plant, but fill in doing piping and vessel inspection as needed. Its not a bad gig, you get to %@%% off engineers and welders.

Catt will do on the 1215! have been looking at the stuff in housen and six mile thanks for all of the info.

Heading out to the Bend this weekend for some recreational fishing. I dont spend much time out there and it has been 2 months since my last trip. Staying at Big Bass but may trailer down South so if anyone has any helpful pointers or areas where we can catch a few fish I would be most appreciative. I have a few spots in the Mill creek area that has produced in the past and have some other areas that I pulled from Acme and Google but other than that I am open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Scott

The humps in Six Mile and Housen Bay have been money for me lately. Some days they want a crankbait, some days a Skinny Dipper, and other days a T-Rig or jig. Just got to figure out what they will bite that particular day, but the fish are there for sure.

Thanks Fanatic.

TxGator, what does buying a boat have to do with keeping you from seeing more of the Bend?

Rumors circulating about SRA lowering Toledo Bend 5 more feet is false.

Jim Washman of the Sabine River Authority: the only water we’re letting out was just enough to let the natural flow go through and the only thing that is pulling it down is usage and evaporation, and there are no plans to let it down any farther.
