So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?

Featured Replies

Congrat TxGator! Thats an awesome fish and what better way to catch him than on a top water bait!!

I went up to Toledo yesterday evening and fished from 4:00-7:30 (it started raining) and then 6:00-2:00 today and caught a whopping 4 fish. I fished the humps I caught my fish on last month...0. Went down and fished Hog Pin and caught 2 on a frog, fished Boones Crossing humps and caught 0...fished Arnolds, yup, you guessed it, 0...fished Yocum, once again, 0. Moved back to Boones Crossing point and caught 2 on a spoon. My biggest fish was 3lbs and the other 3 were 15" fish. That place amazes me. One day I feel like a hero, then Im back to a zero lol. I fished 2 FOW all the way to 40 FOW and everything inbetween. I hope some of you are having better luck than I had!

I thought it would be appropriate to bump this thread after hearing the bad news of @Catt's passing.  I don't fish Toledo Bend but this is a very interesting read for anyone.  I know Tommy took a lot

Sounds like one of my reports there Wesley!

I am headed out this weekend for at least two trips. Chompin at the bit since i didn't go last weekend.

Back water, here is what i have.

Fish the drains and points that drop off really deep. Position the boat in 40 and cast in 20 with a crig, dark color baits.

Thanks SkeeterDon - Leaving in the morning - Will give you a report when I get back

The small club tournament on Sam Raburn was rather unusual. We went up on Friday and launched out of Jackson Hill. We checked out alligator cove, deer stand, Phofer's (sp) creek and Veach. We only managed 3 small fish on a white chatter bait over the hydrilla.

We only fish from daylight till 3:00 p.m. on Sat. and till 1:00 on Sun. Sat morning we decided to go to Mud creek. We threw ribbit frogs, pop "R"s, tiny torpedos and lunker lures. Catching only a few small fish. THEN, we lucked into, what I think to be a very unusual pattern for this time of the year, we started throwing weightless flukes up in the thick grass. It's 100 degrees, and the water temp is 90 degrees and here we are sitting in 3 ft. of water throwing into the shallows. Main lake points seemed to be the key. We had 5 fish for a little over 9 lbs. on Sat. and only 3 fish on Sun. that tipped the scales at over 9 lbs., but one was a 5lb. 13 oz.

We came in 1st place and won $270.00 plus big bass on Sun. for $100.00, so almost paid for the trip. I can only think that the wave action on the bank aerates the water and increases the oxygen, and the grass provides a little shade. I sure never expected to find them on the bank with the weather conditions we have been having.

Keep a tight line

that is awesome, glad you were able to put a pattern together. congrats on the win.

wow, who would have thought, 90 degrees and bass that shallow, must be the oxygen and shade.

quick report from this weekend.

fished sat. 6/30, 530am-9 and literally caught nothing. Fishin partner and I were trying to force a grass pattern. Fished Points, and Humps that had scattered hydrilla in depths of 12-20 feet. It actually confused me that these fish wouldn't eat. i know they were there, cuz i caught them there a week before. C-rigs, T-rigs, drop shots, and cranks. Nothing. Very frustrating morning.

Went in, got lunch, napped and regrouped. We decided to avoid grass all together in the pm. Went to a deep hump that only covers about 30 square yards with no real cover on it. Top of the hump is 24', surrounded by water ranging from 35-37 feet. It turned out to be a good decisiion. We got to the spot at 545 and fished until 830 and caught a total of 26 fish. 21 Largemouth, 15 being over 14". Our biggest 5 weight right at 18 lbs. other 5 fish were, 3 white bass, 1 spotted bass, and 1 drum.

As for the pattern, all the fish were suspended off the bottom, ranging from 17-20 feet from the water's surface. Caught 5 fish in about 15 minutes on 6XD crankbaits. Then the school slowed a bit, Made a switch to 3.5" jiggin spoons. It was on fire from then on. Caught 20 on jiggin spoons and lost 5-6 more.

ok, sorry for the long post..

Nice fish...the fishing has been tough out there the past couple of weeks.

Anybody been night fishing any? I read a couple reports of some BIG stringers caught at night on black emarld worms.

Good job C-rig!!! Don't worry about the length of the post - Very informative

keep a tight line

Fished TB last Saturday daylight to 11:00 am. Fished Penelton Bridge area. My brother managed 4 keepers that averaged about

3#. He also caught about 3-4 short fish. I managed only 2 keepers for about 5.5#, and only released 2 short fish. We tried a few

points early, did not catch a fish. All our fish were caught fishing hard bottom humps in 20 feet of water with 30 surronding the area.

All keepers were caught on big texas rigged worms in your normal summer colors. Except one came on a 6XD, but was fouled

hooked on the side of the guill. Never really felt the fish hit, and it was at the boat. I was playing around with my hydrowave, who

knows. I saw fish suspended off of the bottom and some relating to the bottom.

i fished friday night, out of six-mile. let me tell you, this place Kicked my butt. My partmer and i ran to high line cove and started with poppers and weight less flukes, two srikes on the fluke, ran to mcgee flats and worked 7 to 14 fow first pass thru, 1 short on a chatter bait,,went to the deep points off the lfats with big worm and jig, 12 to 30 fow,,,,nothing,,,went down to mill creek southern side working all mentioned baits and a black jitter bug, from 3 to 20 fow and nothing, back to mcgee flats, nothing,,,,into hickory ridge (little lows),,nothing,,,,ran to six-mile flats, working 7 to 10 fow,,,nothing,,back to highline, caught 1 short on brushhog thrown into the pencil grass edge,,,found out that a lot of the guys were throwing a baby brush hog into the egdes of the pencil grass and were catching 'em all night, (nothing big),,winning stringer came from around tx island,,,but they didn't say with what or what depth,,,22lbs,,,does this mean i can catch 'em shallow like that in two weeks for my club tourny?

I have ben having more success offshore in depths of 20 to 30 feet. keying on humps/points where there is timber in that depth seems to be working out for me.

That has it's down sides though. Hooked what I felt to be the largest bass i have ever felt this morning. Noticed i said hooked. Lesson.....check your line often when fishing in timber.

Still mad at myself over that stupid mistake.

Find some lighted boat docks and throw a spinnerbait, frog, and big worm around them. THat is how I've had my best success on TB at night. The south bank in Housen normally produces some good fish. :eyebrows:

  • 3 weeks later...

Been quite on the bend, must be toooo hot to post.

Anyone know how Catt is doing?

I havent heard from Catt...hope all is well.

I've been busy, so I havent been able to make my way up to the bend. Just had my first baby boy last night at 6:32, 7lbs 9oz! Now I have a fishing partner for years to come :respect-059:

Well, congrats on the new addition,,,,and also, hope all is well with Catt,,and the bend is still tough for me,,,only took 9 1/2 lbs to win my small club tourny

congrats on the new fishing buddy, years of enjoyment to come

Wow only 9.5 lbs. sounds tough

Bass-Fanatic Congrats on the new addition. Nothing like having a son to fish with. Know from experience!!!!!!

To Jcfreak

Have you been on the lake at Livingston?? Will be at the lake the 18th and 19th.

I guess all good things have to come to an end. It sure has gotten quite on here. Hope ya'll are getting to spend some quality time on the water. Keep a tight line. Dutch

yeah dutch sure has been quite, will be on the bend in 4 weeks, so you all give me what you have, unless you have not been fishing due to the heat.

Have fished Rayburn and Conroe and have a small club tournament on Livingston on the 18th and 19th. We are only fishing from daylight to 1:00 p/m/ due to the heat. Have not been on the Bend since April. I did see Catt's name on one of the La. forums s maybe he has given up on us. Good luck and keep a tight line. Dutch

Catt's last post on this thread was May 11th, he was getting ready for spinal surgery.

Post a link to Catt's post, so we can ask how he is doing.

I just texted him, I will let you know if he replys back.

Wesley

Thanks Wesley
