This is my dads first Smallie trip so I hope we get into at least a few fish despite the cold blast.

My biggest fish from Saturday, 18.5" and 3.15 pounds on an Xcaliber XR50. She was a tournament fish, had a cull tab hole in her bottom jaw and was a short distance from Turkey Point ramp.

be pretty rough to cull 3.15 fish huh?

Spent a couple of hours up there earlier in the summer.  Didn't catch any great numbers or size, but ran into a few decent fish.  Lake looks good and a bank fisherman he told me he caught a 21" LM on a frog.

Had an absolute blast on Saturday. If my dad hadn't shown interest in fishing it with me at the last minute, I probably wouldn't have come out. My biggest at 19" 3.5# on the nose, we had in the livewell in the first 30 minutes. Came on a 5" Sugar Shad swimbait on a weighted swimbait jig. All of my fish Saturday came on that rig, along with a few smaller ones on a squarebill. My dad caught fish on just about everything; swimbait, tube, squarebill, and the Ned. His biggest was 17" and just under 3# that came about ten minutes before we had to head in. He'd been waiting for a good fish all day and was stoked he got one. That's the first little tourney I've gotten to fish with him and it ended up being an awesome day on the water for his first Smallie trip to Melvern.

I'm in Lee's Summit and regularly hit up J.A. Reed...I don't have a boat which sucks. Been doing fairly well all year long on Senko type worms, Lipless, Beetle Spin, Mepps.

 

Last few times out have been pretty dry. Any help besides buy a boat?

A jig has been all they want lately for me. I'm in Lees Summit, too, and things have been tough everywhere.

 

Everywhere I've been, at least. Those kansas guys seem to be catching good smallies.

It's good to have all areas of the water column, which you have for the most part. I'd consider throwing a topwater piece into your game, though it's just now getting to where that bite will slowly taper off. Either way, the topwater bite has been extremely hot recently and I would not hesitate to throw one. A buzzbait will normally be fine on smaller waters. I'd go with black, seeing as how in smaller water, fish are chasing sunnies. 

i forgot to mention...i've been throwing zara spook, spook jr., spook puppy, KVD Sexy frog, Spro mini frog, Chartreuse & white buzzbaits, & Jitterbugs as well.

My Mini frogs got around 7 hits in 1.5hrs toward late evening. Only one keeper over 15".

Sounds like you're set then. My fishing from shore, I usually bring three rods- a spinning rod, a medium heavy casting rod with flouro and a medium casting rod with mono.

 

I cycle through lures until I find the right one. A few spinnerbaits, few shallow crankbaits, etc are all I need for moving presentations in the middle of the water column. A buzzbait or popper usually produces for me if a topwater bite is going on from shore. Frogs are good too if there is grass. On the spinning rod I'll have a wacky rigged senko or ned rig tied on if the bite is tough. On the medium heavy rod, it's hard to beat a 3/8 ounce jig. Bouncing it, dragging it, or even swimming it has worked great for me from shore.

 

A few jigs, few shallow crankbaits, few topwaters, few spinnerbaits, and a few senkos are about all you should ever need if fishing smaller waters so it sounds like you're on the right track. Sometimes the bite is just off. It happens.

Went to Melvern yesterday afternoon, smallmouth bite might even be better than last week. There were only a couple other boats out. All the usual baits worked.

I'd expect it to keep getting better until it gets real cold. Still waiting for this Fall jerkbait bite I always hear about...

I was out there Thursday before the tournament and that Saturday and tore them up on a jerkbait both days. French pearl RC STX is all you need. Toad whites were slamming them too.

I took my dad to Lonestar Staurday morning .  Had battery problems so only fished for about 2 hours.  Caught two nice largemouth over 19 inches and a couple small ones.  All on T-rigs and Jigs.

Just got back from the Fishing for Freedom event at Long Shoal Marina that the Leavenworth Bass Club sponsors.  Had a good time.  Didn't catch a lot of fish, but then I fish Truman so seldom that I'm not surprised.  I tried, even got there early and took a soldier out both Saturday and Sunday.  Mostly stayed within 5 miles of Long Shoal, but we did take a run to the dam & back later in the day, just to run the boat a little and swill a couple of beers.  I was also thinking that those shallow islands in front of the Little Tebow might hold some fish, and they might have, but they didn't want to bite for us.    Little smaller turnout, 127 boats.  Apparently they had a couple of dozen late cancellations on both the boater and warrior sides.  The word prior to the event was that they were looking at around 150 boats this year.  Weather was chilly, but not uncomfortable.  74 out the the 127 boats weighed fish.  Not every one caught a lot fish but most everyone caught some.  I didn't do so well on bass, but I did catch a 9.5 wiper that was good for biggest trash fish - got a plaque but gave it to me co-angler.  I threw the spinnerbait that hooked the fish, but I absolutely would not have gotten the fish in the boat had he not been there ready with the net.

 

All of the warriors I personally met ( 20 0r 30) were very appreciative of the event.  The opportunity to take a weekend and just chill doesn't happen all that often for them.

 

Overall, it is a well run event for a good cause, I'm probably going back next year.

Glad to hear most of you guys caught a few trash fish, I saw the results over on *** and it looks like not many bass were caught. 

 

I hate to say it, but I'd be a lot more inclined to go if it weren't on Truman. I was busy and couldn't make it this year, anyways, but I feel like turnout would have to be better on LOZ than Truman.
