That's awesome. I just know I was super pumped when I landed her. It was the first cast as well. Definitely will be going back. 

Went to Melvern Saturday 6/17. The late week rains muddied it up again-- just as it was starting to clear. It took me awhile to figure them out but I was able to start catching some smallmouths. Most came on topwater (spook and whopper plopper) but I caught a couple on a tube and one, my first at Melvern, on a bladed jig. The key was finding water that was just a little clearer than everywhere else. Caught one that went 18" but it was so skinny it didn't make 2.5 lbs.

Something I was thinking about the last couple days, when I started fishing Melvern, it was high and dirty for the most part. The really clear water was something I only experienced for those few years. We still caught quite a few smallmouth but not the numbers during those clear water years. I'm thinking I might need to break out some of the old tactics I was using then to catch fish instead of trying to force them to do what they were doing during the glory days. 

Has anyone fished Lake Lenexa recently?  Can you drop a gas powered boat on there as long as you only run the troller?

Interesting. I just started fishing Melvern in 2015, so all I know is this clear(er) water era. What you say makes perfect sense, though.

Not this year.  Yes, just run the trolling motor and you're good!

Anyone fishermen in the Johnson County area? With any new spots?

I fished Gardner for 3 hours with my girlfriend earlier this week and ended up catching 15 between the two of us, mostly small fish with four between 15" and 18". The better fish seemed to be on the water willow edges and were caught on a senko. Fished some of the deeper rock areas with brush hogs, jigs, and neds and found numbers but not consistent size.

 

With the nice weather this weekend, I'll be running down to Stockton to fish some 'new-to-me' water up the big Sac.

Ya, me and my buddy did a few weeks ago and we didn't even get a bite. Everyone we talked to got skunked as well. It was a barren wasteland, sadly. 

The B.O. is back guess I need to get back to checking the BR! Jacky-Boy has Baseball three nights a week, so that's pretty much my life now. We did get the boat wet yesterday at Gardner pretty much the same song and dance I had a solid fish on a 6 inch rage swim bait. then he whipped me on Da"Ned, Never a bad thing when the Boy-O boats more than me, the look on his face never gets old. Did have one of those Gardner brutes boil on a bubble walker but, before I could get a follow up cast a toon decided to beach right on the boil. THANKS TOONERS! Going out to the Dotte next Thursday, sounds like numbers and quality are up.

Glad you're still making it out buddy. Need to get Jacky down here to get whatever he wants to hunt with sighted in to be ready for deer season. I've been getting lots of pictures on my new food plot, some nice velvet bucks, lots of does, couple turkey, and at least 1 bobcat.

Spent the week up on Lake Michigan with some family last week. I was excited to try and get on some smallmouth but never could get them figured out. Caught a truck load of big drum off the pier by our house and a handful of largemouth. Finally was able to sneak away and rent a kayak to fish a better area. First time fishing from a kayak, it was pretty fun but as you can tell from parts of the video, I didn't have all the logistics down and did a lot of fumbling around. If I wasn't saving for a house and a bass boat I'd contemplate buying a yak. I liked the added challenge and could see it being fun on some of the smaller lakes around here.

It's even more fun out of a real fishing kayak. I've fishing out of one of those wobbly little sit inside yaks, spent more time worrying about tipping than I did fishing. Hooksets and fighting fish are both way different in a kayak too. Took some getting use to for me. You ever want to borrow mine you're welcome to it. It's great for the little lakes that aren't really worth hauling the boat to.

Might have to take you up on that sometime. The place we rented from only had 1 sit on top available but I think was already out for the day. Also, my feet were really sun burnt from the day before so I was kind happy to have them under something.

Im a bigger guy and wanna try out a kayak for fishing before i decide to drop the hundreds of dollars buying one sometime.

Haven't been on here in weeks and weeks with no real desire to, but seeing you post made the trip back 100% worth it. Miss ya buddy.

Not that I know of. You can rent them at Lake Jacomo in MO, but I think they're just cheap sit inside ones. BPS in Olathe does some yak demos, you might call and ask when they're doing their next one.

KC paddlers will do demos.  You can rent the cheap ones at Shawnee Mission Park.

Fished Mound City Lake last Saturday with @micahthorlawson. Had an okay day, no real big fish to speak of. Fish were blowing up all over the place when we pulled up to the ramp. It looked like something out of a dream. There were 3 boats ahead of us at the ramp at 5:30 in the morning. None of which were in a hurry to get in the lake so we fished from bank while we waited. Caught my first fish on an MS Slammer and Micah had a good one come unbuttoned at his feet on a Whopper Plopper. By the time we made it in the water the topwater bite had stopped. Almost snagged a herring that took off from the bank and flew under my line. I've heard guys tell stories about doing it before but never had it happen to me. My line got wrapped in its wings as it took off and it crashed into the lake and luckily shook free. We've had better days out there before but felt good to get back on the water. It had been a while.

 

 

My folks came down from Omaha for a long weekend and we fished Wolf and LaCygne to avoid some of the boat traffic.

 

Wolf ended up pretty hard for us. We found some better sized smallies (16-18") in very shallow water along some weed points but the fish were pretty scattered. 

 

Fished LaCygne on Monday (more or less just to get out)- after catching a few wiper we switched gears to target largemouth. From 1:30 to 4, my dad and I put twelve in the boat, with the best five around 20lb; the kicker fish being a solid 21.5" on a shakeyhead.

 

It's nice to figure something out at that lake, especially given the weird time of day and my original expectations. I feel some LaCygne-karma is probably in order in the near future. Consistency and LaCygne are two very independent things...

Wow!  There were several of us out last night and only one boat had anything resembling a decent limit.  Nice job.
