joefish
Have not fished Olathe Lake in maybe 4 years, but used to do OK there
NickBender
I've spent most of last year fishing on the MO side, but Gardner produced the most fish for me of the few lakes I went to on the KS side. Biggest was out of Olathe, but as @Bluebasser86 said, it isn't easy to figure out.
KansasBassin
Is there a website that show if a tourney is going on at a lake? Thinking of going to Bone and wondering if there is a tourney this weekend.
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 5 Global Moderator Share Posted April 5 kdwpt has a few but so many people run tournaments without any permits anymore and Kansas doesn't care that I don't know how you'd even track them.
KansasBassin
agreed there were a couple listed on there then checked a few other clubs. Looks clear!
Robinhood21
First post on here guys. Been a lurker for a couple years now. Bass fished a lot in high school with my uncle that used to let me tag along on some small local tournaments. Fishing took a back seat for a while as my hunting obsession took over. Fast forward to the summer of 2021 and I started fishing again. Ended up buying a 2007 Bass Tracker on a whim that fall and went in head first. Getting back into Bass fishing again has been a fun journey and quite overwhelming at first but I’m slowly getting the hang of things again. Learning new techniques that I never used in the past has been a fun learning curve. I live just down the road from Melvern so that’s where I spend most of my free time. Last year I struggled but I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of things. Got to Melvern yesterday morning just before sunrise as I knew I didn’t have a lot of time before the winds got crazy. Started off throwing a Vision 110 on the riprap and started catching fish right away. Had my best day in my boat so far with 20+ fish in just a few hours before the wind became unbearable. Just thought I’d give a report and introduce myself. *Savage Gear Battletek Jerkbait Rod 6’10” Medium Fast *Shimano Curado 70 MGL *Trey Harper Painted Vision 110 Alt (Table Rock Killer Color) *Berkley Vanish Fluoro 10lb

Now take that junk line off your reel before your custom jerkbait "Vanishes", 🤣 I got out for a few hours Saturday evening in the wind and rain and caught my biggest kayak bass of the year so far. Dirtyeggroll
Fished Monday through Thursday last week. We are anywhere from 12-18 degrees warmer water temperature than this time last year. I think I missed the real pre-spawn munch and finally ended my 5 year streak of a 6+ lber for the first part of April (no more fishing for me until the end of May). I did manage one that was real close and 5.81 as a kicker for a 19 lb bag at a “new-to-me” lake. Fish were all in <2 ft of water and water temp was 68 at the lake I wash fishing last Thursday.

Haha Thanks Clayton. I spooled her up because it was all I had at the beginning of the year and I hadn't made my "order". Luckily it hasn't failed me yet. I've actually bought a few items from you the last couple years. Spinnerbaits and some micro jigs. I watched it on youtube.... that's a hawg!
Robinhood21
I'm curious what this cold front is going to do. I'll be going out Sunday and am undecided on WolfCreek or Melvern. I'll probably end up going to Melvern as I don't want to risk getting kicked off Wolf. I'm just starting to get the hang of Melvern so it's hard for me to go to another lake right now. Where's everyone heading this week?

I have a couple new lakes I've been wanting to check out too so who knows.

Robinhood21
My Brother in Law and I ended up going to Melvern on Sunday. Beautiful day! Started out throwing jerkbaits up the dam. Caught a pile of smallmouth, nothing of any size. Ended up hooking into something huge! At the hook set it started running at the boat and I didn't think anything of it until it turned 90 degrees and started peeling all the line of my Curado 70. I looked at my BOL and said, "its going to spool me!" I feared it would bend out the hooks if I applied any more pressure but I was starting to run out of line. I attempted to thumb the spool a little and ended up snapping my line. I figured I hooked into a huge bluecat since it ran at me the way it did. It was pretty fun although I was totally bummed... I would have liked to see exactly what it was. We went on down the lake a bit and my BOL hooked into a couple big crappie on back to back casts with his squarebill so we ended up crappie fishing the rest of the day and brought home a good mess of them. 7 hours on the lake is a good day
Robinhood21
"Bluebasser86!" HAHA, that was me at the boat ramp on Sunday. Looks like you had a pretty good day with the family! I've been on a crappie kick lately but now I'm back on the bass. I got a couple of hours in before work today and happened to nail this ol girl on a 2.75" tube with the bfs setup. I thought it was a drum for sure until she surfaced... definitely got the heart pumping. Curado BFS Phenix Feather Light Blumpkin 2.75" tube 1/8oz jighead PowerPro 10lb 8lb Invisix leader. Crappy pic

I have a secret white bass spot we probably caught 30 off of in 20 minutes before I got tired of unhooking them 😅 It was a great time.
Dirtyeggroll
The fishing style in the Kansas City area is quite different than that which worked for me up in Omaha. I think I’m getting the hang of it though.

That was from me trying to get the hook out and my pliers slipped and penetrated straight through. Hopefully it’ll recover.
Dirtyeggroll
I really want to catch a 3-lb smallmouth in the KC are up to 1.5 hours away. So far I have only caught a handful of smallmouth and all around a pound. Mostly by accident but have started trying to target them more specifically. Who’s had luck with smallmouth in the area that kind give me some tips?

Those are really the only 2 good options within that distance to have a shot at that size fish right now. You could stumble into one at Perry, Clinton, or Shawnee also, but it's much less likely.

I’ve caught some small ones like 12-13” max at WYCO and one at Melvern. I’ve heard Melvern is full of the small ones and I’ve been a couple of times and have only been able to catch the one. I probably have some stuff to learn about targeting them. Thanks for the tips.

Surprised you haven't run into a bigger one at Wyco, I've caught several over 3 to almost 5 out there.

Oh I know they are in there, I think I just tend to fish for largemouth more in the area/techniques that they overlap less frequently. I did have one smallmouth follow a glide out there that would have been a fish of a lifetime. I tend to focus on the weed lines out there, and have a lot of success with largemouth maybe I need to focus more on rocks and maybe deeper if I’m looking for smallmouth. I really am not sure.
