curious what hook size you use for say a 7.5 inch t-rig worm. ive almost always used a 1/0 tru-turn with the theory that you can catch big fish on a little hook, but lately seem to be missing some hooksets. with all the new wide gap and bigger sizes available, whats your preference and why? thanks

Most of my hooks are 3/0, you can practically rig any bait with a 3/0 hook. Got some 2/0 ( about 10 hooks ) and some 4/0 ( about 10 ) for special needs ( like the bait being too small for a 3/0 hook or being too big for a 3/0 hook.)

I have all sizes of Gammie EWG's from 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0 and typically always fish the 3/0 about 90% of the time.  If you are going to carry one size for me it would be a 3/0 as Raul said.  The other sizes come in handy when using different sized baits and I'm a fanatic when it comes to gear, so I have everything and I would say the best idea and what I kind of use when I throw a worm is to have the hook point enter at the bottom of the egg sack on all my worms/senkos.

I don't think your theory is a sound one.

I fish Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks for most soft plastics.

The exceptions are 3/0 for 3 1/2" tubes and 5/0 Offset Round Bend

for 7" Senkos and Swimming Senkos.

I think what he means is that although it's true you can catch a big fish on a little hook, using a little 1/0 hook on a 7.5 inch worm is not optimal. There's just too much bait with too little hook, and with a hook that small, even if the fish does engulf the part of the bait with a hook, you'll nab more fish with a bigger hook.

I usually use 3/0 EWG Gammies, but have recently been using more 4/0, can't say why really. I just like that size a little more, even though the difference is pretty minimal.

I recently bought a pack of Owner 11/0 hooks for my 7 inch Fin-S jerkbaits...those hooks are huge  ;D

I use 2/0, 3/0, and 4/0.  A 1/0 size is just too small for me.

In particular I use a 2/0 regular offset shank wom hook(owner) for a 7.5 inch worm.If the body of the worm is thicker then I use a 3/0. I dont like EWG hooks for standard worms but always use them for thicker baits,senkos,flukes,creatures.

As far as using a 1/0 hook is concerned:Its not the length of the hook thats the problem,its the amount of gap in the hook.The hook is set when you yank the bait back out through the fishs jaws.If the gap is all plugged with plastic the hook will slide through the fishs mouth instead of into it.

I use 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 hooks. About 75% of the time I use 3/0. I sometimes use 1/0 when finese fishing and I use 4/0 and 5/0 for flukes & frogs. I use regular offset worm hooks on worms & lizards and EWG hooks on thicker baits like frogs.

Agree with the Bass Finatic on regular offset owner style hook on the slimmer or thinner bodies, but I normally use a 4/0 minimum on any and all 6" or over soft plastics. Have not seen any proof that a smaller size than 4/0 gets more strikes either, so the hook up % always get the nod from me.

alright, i appreciate your input guys. i will try some other sizes, and some wide gaps and go from there. its not that i am not catching bass, its just that the hit/set ratio is off, also on some larger fish, they seem to get the smaller hook deep in the mouth and difficult to remove. thanks

Owner 4/0 J hook. No flex in the hook on set and the cutting point one of the best if not the best. But their $3.79 for five.

I almost always choose hooks based on the thickness of the bait, not the length.

I have some 4" baits that require 5/0 hooks, but I have some 8" baits that a 2/0 is best for.

I want enough gap to allow the bait to get out of the way on the hookset.
