Water Dog Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 All at 60 yrds or less.... Nothing like taking an animal with a hand cannon for sure. You are right I need to try one of the handguns, 44, 45 or 357. Most of us are over gunned in the brush country that I live in. The deer are useually close if you plan it right. That's one reason archery is so big, they let you hunt all season and the deer are close. Habit keeps me using the 250 99 Savage (inch groups at 100 yds ain't bad), or the 35 rem or 30/30 Marlins. Did anyone mention Marlins, fine lever guns. I believe that it was Elmer Keith who told the story of shooting a black bear with a 45 long colt and the heavy bullet went from front to back of the animal. That is a relatively low power round compared to the 44 mag that will do a lot of damage. I killed a deer when I was about 13 or 14 with a 22 short (nobody told me that I couldn't). The bullet went between the ribs on one side hit the ribs on the other and I have never seen more damage to a heart from the ricochet. The deer was maybe 15' away, never ran a step. Almost any pistol would work if you would take your time and pick your shot. Since CNC there are a lot of fine rifles on the market. Those bolt action Savages are about the most accurate cost effective guns that you can find right out of the box. Quote
Ky_Lake_Dude Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Winchester actually closed it's last U.S. plant a few months ago so if you have a U.S. made winchester take really good care of it. Quote
Water Dog Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Unlike Marlin, Winchester and Colt forgot about quality. Some US car makers have done the same thing. I have some old Winchesters and a Colt 45 ACP that are really high quality. Their cheap guns used to be high quality. When you forget quality, the users are the first to notice. Winchester started making junk in 1964 that is why pre-64 Winchesters have always been valued so highly. Winchester recently went back to quality in their bolt action CNC machined high powered rifles with double extractors something like the older ones but maybe it was too little to late, too many excellent alternatives. It is hard to over come a bad name. S&W sold us out a few years ago on the 2 nd. Amendment and practically went out of business until new management responded to the users. Colt did the same and dropped their quality, and down the tubes they went, they've come back with some good single action revolvers, albeit expensive. Gun companies can't make it on govt. contracts, not enough of them, and too much competition. They need the civilian market. I've been impressed with Tarus and their attitude toward the consumer, us, the USA market. They are very pro 2nd amendment. I don't have any but would give them a close look in a single action handgun for example. If I could find a deal on a CNC machined Winchester in 270, I would get one to use. Collectibles, I don't know, their name might not make the new ones worth much. Quote

Water Dog Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Nice summary there Tom! Looks like we've been down some of the same roads. ;D Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 My favorite all time pistol if I could only have one LoL, Good thing we can own more then one so we dont have to make those tough decisions. ;D Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Wow, I feel really out of place in this thread, seeing as I only have the Marlin 22, and I only use it once in a while for targets. I'm not a hunter anymore, but in my teens I had a couple Remingtons, 12 and 20 ga., and liked the 20 more than the 12 (better choke for geese). Quote
Isaiah527 Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 I worked at a quail and dove with sporting clays. I maintanced 70+ guns in our safe. Benelli by far was the most reliable. Beretta had t be cleaned the most with the most build up after a single shot. Remington was in between benelli and beretta. For deer hunting, i use a model 700 remington 7mm-08. Quote
Aaron Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 I only have two guns right now, a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum 12ga and a Taurus 24/7 Pro .40cal. I really like both guns. I plan on adding a Ruger 10/22 here pretty soon and maybe a Ruger revolver as well. I guess my favorite would be Remington. Quote

For deer hunting, i use a model 700 remington 7mm-08. I shot sporting clays competitively for five years. I ran a Beretta 390 Gold mostly. Many, many times I fired 500 rounds a day without a single jam or slow-rack. I have over 60,000 rounds through that gun. I don't doubt that in your experience what you say is true, but I think that there is a reason that 70+% of us ran Berettas. I also loaded my own shells that were super clean burning, and very very slick hulls. Quote
Isaiah527 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 i hear that man. i shot on the junior stage using a benelli. I might be misstated, I believe the semi automatic models that we use as "club guns" I believe they are sturdy and well made, but i recommended otherwise unless you're willing to put in the time to take care of it, which in my experience, majority fail to. I, myself own a beretta silver pigeon III. I have never had a problem with it, although it has missed a few targets i swear i was dead on. ;D Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted February 27, 2007 Super User Posted February 27, 2007 I have a Silver Pigeon as well, I love that gun, but I always shot a few birds better with the auto, I don't know why. I miss clays, I haven't shot in over a year now. Ridiculously expensive thing to be into though, even worse than fishing! Come to think of it I ought to sell some of my gear. Quote
Isaiah527 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Its only expensive, if you don't work at a sporting clay place if you're selling, let me know whats for sale Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted February 27, 2007 Super User Posted February 27, 2007 I don't think I want to sell any of my guns (you know how sentimental they are) but If you are interested in a loader or supplies, let me know. I'm sure you are good on hulls, because of where you work, but if anyone needs nitro 27's or AA Sporting Clays hulls, I have so freaking many I can't stand it, I don't know what I have in the way of other stuff, but I will look. Quote
Isaiah527 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 you can sell those hulls on ebay. We would have several hundred after a day, far too many for our own personal use, so i sold quite a few on ebay. easy money. im good on loading and supplies, thank you. Quote

logger Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I love my Benelli Nova 12ga. I grouse and woodcock hunt and it has been terrific. It is a much nicer gun than the 870's that I have owned in the past and easier on the wallet. Its a snap to clean. Only complaint is that I don't have the money to buy a super black eagle semi auto.
