In the market for a 'survival' type knife

Featured Replies

I've been shopping around for one for a while, and have looked on eBay, but I'm apprehensive about them since they're so cheap for the most part. Anyone have any suggestions? Specific ones, brands, any ideas are welcome.

Any knife will do! I promise if you need to survive in the woods any will do.

But the one that comes to mind would be the Swiss Army knife, this thing can

occupy your mind from being lost for hours. This thing has all grades of gadgets on it. Nothing is impossible with this knife. You can do any thing from cutting

your hair to skinning a deer, or you might want to do a little screwing and maybe

pop a cork. I mean there is just no end to what you can do with it. It's just

fascinating to me.

Personally, when I'm in the mood for screwing, the Swiss Army Knife is the very last thing that comes to mind.   ;D

How True!

run a google search on tactical or survival knives.  You'll find just about anything your heart desires ;) .  SOG, Columbia River are a couple that come to mind.  Also check into Kershaw.

My two favorite manufacturers are, Benchmade...and Kershaw.

After spending most of my misguided youth and a lot of my adult life outdoors my choice is going to be a lot different than most. In a pure survival situation and of course hunting and fishing my choice would be for a quality 2 blade folder and a hatchet. With these two tools if you take time to count the uses for them you might encounter it will far outnumber a survival knife. The extra uses for a hatchet for chopping firewood, driving tent stakes or dressing big game make it a tool I would not want to be without in a survival situation.

Now if were talking urban survival, then the choice is without doubt the hatchet for me. Think about it, would you rather face a guy with a knife or a hatchet?

For urban survival? I'll stick with my battle axe. However, the cops don't like me carrying that. It is part of my home defense ensemble.

Frankly, for a "true" survival knife, one where you expect to be out for weeks, you really don't want a super-tough knife. once that edge wears off, what are you going to do?

I was taught that you want a knife that you can sharpen on a rock. The metal may not hold an edge long, but you can always sharpen it again.

For a short-term survival situation, the "survival" knives work, but for a long-term situation I wouldn't want one.

In either case, I'll take that hatchet with me too. ;)
