Quality of NFL football anouncers

Featured Replies

Probably just me ( Matt Crum ) getting old and crusty but i miss the days of quality announcers. The ones now just don't seem to have interesting voices.

In my teenage days and even later we had  Curt Gowdy, Johnny Morris, pat Summerall,  Tom Brookshire, Don Meredith, Frank Gifford, Howard Coselle, Lindsey Nelson. madden is still ok ( a little over the top ) but I just can't stand many of today's announcers.

Baseball seems to have some decent ones still but football stinks

What are your thoughts?

I hear ya loud and clear ,I like all the guys you mentioned except Coselle. I have (had) no use for that guy.

he was kinda annoying but you gotta admit he did have a great voice.

Today's announcers all sound like amateur radio or like talking with cans and string

maybe add Len Dawson he was pretty good ( maybe stil is)

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are the future!  They match up perfectly and treat the audience like we might have ever seen a football game. I think they are an outstanding pairing.

Ah, the good ole days.

Johnny Unitas.  Bart Starr.  The Stork.  Hollywood Henderson.  Joe Namath.

Those were the days.

Now, we have mass produced sports announcers from colleges across the country.

Joe McKnight of River Ridge, Louisiana, passed up LSU to go to Southern Cal as he wants to be a sports announcer when he grows up.

First time I have heard of a high school foodball player going to a school for its academics in a long, long time.  May it will never happen again.

And I have to agree, the announcers are vanilla.

And hate him or love him, Cosell was fun to listen to.  He even spoke about "the monkey", the Bait Monkey? on one Monday Night telecast even before we knew that a Bait Monkey existed.

But you have to be politically correct and not say anything about anyone to get anybody upset.  So no one says it like it is.  No one calls Phil Phulmer of Tennessee fat.  Or Nick Saban a liar.  Or that Jo Pa has dimentia.  Or hint that USC has so far avoided NCAA penalties for paying off its recruits or their families.  Or that Kentucky basketball sucks today.  Or that the Raiders are totally awful.  Etc., etc., etc.

And lo and behold, there is a women broadcasting college football on ESPN and we have women on the sidelines and women in the NFL locker rooms.

I remember when it was embarassing to have your regular and sports underwear seen by anyone other than your team mates. We would have a fit if our mothers hung them out to dry on a clothes line.

Yikes, what is this world coming to?????

Coselle and Ali were they a pair or what! Coselle would be pulling for who ever was winning the fight. ;D Then there is this guy on Basketball

that does the Baaa Bee can't stand him, I will get up and change the channel. ;)

I DO like Joe Buck, but I'm sorry, Troy Aikman is boring to me. He's not bad, just boring. And, for the life of me, I can't stand Al Michaels (I still want to know what a "footbull" is), although he has managed to survive with Madden. Madden is OK, but I think he's losing his edge in his years.

Don't forget Keith Jackson or Hank Stramm! Classics. Another I can't stand is Brent Musberger. He drives me insane, and I don't know why.

As far as women announcing football (and my wife agrees), they have no place there. The only quality female sports announcer I've ever seen who seemed to know what she was talking about was Robin Roberts. Just my .02.

Coselle and Ali were the epitome of showmanship. In real life, the closest of friends.

Keith Jackson is by far my Favorite Football announcer. I cant stand Joe Buck from the WS games he calls for Fox Sports. To be painfully honest I usually turn down my TV and put the radio on and listen to the Patriots announcers call the game and just watch the the TV.

How does that work when you're watching Dallas vs. Green Bay?

I absolutely love to do that while watching a baseball game. Recently, though, while watching one on TV and listening on the radio, I found that the audio was delayed to the radio. By the time you heard it, it had already happened on the screen.

i like aikman and buck i cant stand cornhole, collinsworth, and theisman

as far as sports personalities go i cant even stand the sight or sound of skip bayless, this guy is a clown and a idiot who knows nothing about sports at all other than what he hears from the people across the discussion table from him >:(

Oh, I forgot about Collinsworth.  He bugs me as bad as Musberger.

Well since I dont have the NFL Network Im not watching that game anyway...   ;D ;D ;D

Sometimes I just tone them out because I cant stand them.

The ones that bother me the most are the crew for Monday Night Football. What are these people thinking? They should just call it the Tony Kornheiser Show. He never shuts up and what he has to say usually has nothing to do with the game. Thanks ESPN for destroying another American Pastime.

I do like Aikman and maybe Phil Simms but Madden is the only one left of the old school anouncers.
