Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calories per day

By Chris Chase

After he retires from swimming, Michael Phelps might want to try his hand at competitive eating. The Olympic star recently said he consumes 12,000 calories per day, or 9,500 more than the FDA recommends for an active, young male.

Phelps has to keep his intake up in order to compensate for all the calories he burns during the 30-hours per week he spends in training. He told NBC that an average day might have the following menu:

Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes

Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

How does he build a strong lean body eating a diet like that?

Geez Wayne , thats what you ate for breakfast on the boat last week, WHAT ARE YOU TRAINING FOR?

Three months on his diet and I would resemble a bowling ball!

Swim for hours a day and then do weight training and you can eat whatever you want and still not gain weight.

He spends more time excercising in a day than many of us do working.

fried egg sandwiches

I wasnt refereing to gaining weight. I was refering to building lean muscle mass, which could be better supplemented by eating large amounts of chicken, fish and Lean red meat.

But i guess it doesnt matter, because he is superhuman anyways.  ;) ;D

Wow!!  I bet the muscles in his jaws burn over 1,000 calories just to chew all that up.  ;D

It's all about metabolism.

I can't gain weight.  Literally.  I'm not complaining, we should all be happy with what we have but, I have tried and just can't.

People are blown away at my appetite too.

When I was back loading trucks, this chick supervisor asked me to join a gym w/ her (running a 2 for 1 special)

I said sure and went to GNC and bought the most expensive weight gain stuff there was.  It was $50 and was enough for 2 weeks.  I was double dosing, so, 1 week.  These things have thousands and thousands of calories.  So, $50/week in weight gain.  4 weeks, $200.  I figured I would try it for a month and then justify if the added weight was worth $200.

I lost a pound.

That was the day I gave up and just said,.."Screw it, I'm thin,....what's for dinner?" lol

Wow! Do you really think you could loose that much?

:D;) just kidding lol I couldnt resist

Not surprised at all. Swimming consumes a massive amount of energy/calories. Pro cyclists normally eat around 8,000 - 9,000 calories a day while doing events like the Tour De France (if I recollect right). Endurance athletes NEED fuel:o)

Jimzee gave Phelps a run for his money today.  Took him to Pal's, a great local fast food place.

He had two Big Pal's with cheese, a sauceburger with cheese, large fry, large peanut butter milkshake and a tea.

Approx. 3400 calories.  Time to go work it off... ;)

Or to pass out and take a long nap
