They are going to triple it's budget, apparently

i was reading an article in the paper a couple days ago where used car dealers were saying this program is driving them out of business

That's the plan...

An example of where responsible and ecologically conscientous people (those who already owned and drove fuel efficient cars) aren't receiving squat while those who didn't give a crap how much gas they used are reaping benefits.  Grrrr... >:(

:-?

Meaning, those of us who drive fuel-efficient cars won't get any break when it's time to sell or trade them in.

So you're just angry because the timing was bad? Or because the government isn't going to pay people for cars they ALREADY own?

So you're just angry because the timing was bad? Or because the government isn't going to pay people for cars they ALREADY own?

I'm angry because the taxpayer is being forced to shell out money for those who least deserve it. Most of this is hooey as far as I'm concerned.

Why do you deserve the money anymore than people who are trading in their cars for new ones?

The primary goal of the program is to create an incentive for people to buy new cars, is it not?

Who said I deserve anything?  I'm not asking for any handouts.  I have no issue with providing incentives but not on the backs of the taxpayer.  And certainly not by rewarding those who should have known better in the first place.  For years people were complaining about big trucks, SUV's and vans using so much gas yet others continued to buy them.  Now, they are the ones reaping the rewards.  It's entirely screwed up.

I know 2 people that have used the program, and yes they are continuing it. I think it's a great plan for consumers who could not afford the down payment for a new car and incentive for those to get rid of their guzzlers. The dealers are getting people in the showroom now I just heard today that sales are doing well, good for the economy and good for everyone.

I was hoping to qualify for my wife's car but our mileage is good already, but it's given us incentive to go car shopping, some nice buys around.

Let me start off by saying I agree with your "taxpayer" argument. But as with just about EVERY program like this, there are always people that weren't targeted to get the benefits, but end up getting them

But...You need to look into it more. Not everybody that is taking part in this program drives big trucks, suvs, vans. I have been debating on taking part in this program. I have a 1988 4 cylinder nissan pickup truck 4X4. The thing is old, gets 10-12 mpg and is a clunker (I.E. "CASH FOR CLUNKERS!!!) Tell me why I deserve it the least, because I'm willing to retire a truck that is far past it's prime to reap the rewards of a better MPG vehicle. You need to step outside the box for a minute.

And before you try to go off on a rant about my post, I see where you are coming from about the taxpayers money. But dude, look around all these programs take money from the taxpayers wallet. Yes it's sad and sucks, but it the way the govt. runs.

I just don't agree with your stereotyping of people who are using this program as it was designed.

Brandon

Your calling my opinion a "rant" is an unfair tactic for discrediting it. Dan asked me why I felt this way (while interjecting his own opinion) and I responded. Isn't this what debating is about? My "rant" is directed toward those who have no reasonable claim to it. I'm not talking about people with old cars (although I'm unclear why they should get a good chunk of Joe taxpayers dollar either. Specifically, your desire to retire your old truck is reasonable but why should you get money from someone else to do so)? Broadly speaking, I'm talking about those who bought gas guzzlers, didn't give a %*&^$ what anybody thought, and now they are going to benefit from it. There are better ways of getting someone in the showroom than taking $ out of someone elses pocket. Or does money indeed grow on trees? Your argument that these programs always take money away from the taxpayer is exactly my argument against said programs.

This debate could likely go on and on and I doubt any of it will get anywhere. There are fundamental philosophical differences between the camps. Hence, why there are Republicans and why there are Democrats and why there are capitalists and why there are socialists (or communists). I imagine you can already tell where I rest. Let's just say I regret my choice in the previous election and it won't happen again.

alright guys don't have my thread locked down just yet ::)

Looking for anyone that has already took advantage of the C&C?

Getting ready to leave work anyway so, my question will be, was your value of your vehicle greater than the rebate? if so did you get extra on top of that toward the newer vehicle not the rebate?

Try this:

http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/

My neighbor said he was going take advantage, but I haven't seen him all day to ask him about it.

"An example of where responsible and ecologically conscientous people (those who already owned and drove fuel efficient cars) aren't receiving squat while those who didn't give a crap how much gas they used are reaping benefits. Grrrr... >:("

Intelligent and reasonable debates don't start out with inflammatory comments like this. They argue the point with intelligent words and respect. I think that is what started the fire.

I tried to trade in my Ford Super Clubwagon that I used for a number of years to drive my four kids around. They told me it was a Class III vehicle and that I couldn't trade it for a Class I vehicle so, I missed out.

Five pieces of crap in my driveway and none of them qualified. :'(

NO lien on your car?

If your car is worth more than the rebate you don't get extra credit!

This thing stinks >:(  Heck the dealer I just called on the mini van said the $15,000 price is AFTER the rebate????? wasn't that the same price last year on it I asked? He put me on hold, and I finally gave up on him picking back up ::) what a joke man :P

This is another program that is gonna turn out just like the housing program where people that can't afford the payments on these cars will be getting them and they will be repossesed within a year.  Can't trade a class 3 for a class 1, horsechit either you can trade in an old 10-15 mpg clunker for a new 25+ mpg car or you can't.  Heck they said the program was out of money in 5 days and had to pump more into it.  This was 103 page bill that was screwed up and they think they can do something with a 1000+ page helathcare bill and not turn this country into a third world cesspool????
