RE the wife problem... my wife once randomly got a free one-year subscription to Time, or Newsweek, or something like that, without actually signing up for anything. We have no idea where the subscription came from, but it disappeared after a year. So there's my excuse: "Honestly, honey, I don't know why they keep sending them! It's just like that one time..."
