Thanks guys. It was a team tourney and I fished with John C (.) from here.

We started on a shoreline that we figured would produce some quality fish, along with 4 other boats. In the first half hour we put 3 or 4 shorts in the boat and couldn't get any bigger fish. All of the other boats on that shore were also having the same issue. We kept going down that bank until it turns into a canal that leads to another lake. We came across a small lilly pad patch before the canal and . pitched his jig there and got nailed. This fish was a beast. Stupid me didn't have the net ready so I just grabbed the fish as soon as I could.

So we were going in reverse, we had our big kicker fish we figured was about 4 - 4.5 and now we just needed to fill out our 8 fish limit with 1.5 fish and we would definatley be in the money. As soon as . stuck that fish 5 boats came moving on over to try to fish the pads we were in. ::) We picked them apart and just kept moving on with our one big fish.

Since there were so many boats on such a small lake (34 on 87 acres) I got my little wacky rigged finesse worm ready to do some damage. As by 8am most of the fish were probably sick of seeing jigs and senkos.

Right after the lilly pad patch . took the front of the boat and got us on a cool little deal. The fish were short striking the jig so you would go to set the hook and come back missing your jig trailer. So whenever this would happen I would throw the finesse worm and get them. I think it only failed twice the rest of the day. We kept fishing like this until about 10:30 when we had our 8 fish and our big kicker. I also had dropped a solid 1.5 pound fish at the side of the boat that I was praying wouldn't cost us. But we had to focus on the 4 fish that just barely touched 12" mark and try to get rid of them. And I mean just touched, and could possibly shrink up on us.

Then at around 1pm . put a 14" football in the boat that was probably a .75 pound cull and really helped Then I put a 13.5" fish in the boat that threw out another one.

At around 2pm I went to skip my finesse worm and got a bad bounce. The line ended up over a branch with the finesse worm falling in the water. And of course a fish hits. ;D Thank god for 30 pound braid with 8 pound diameter on spinning rods. I drilled the fish, breaking the branch in the process and swung him in the boat. It was another 14" and helped us get rid of another 12 incher. So now we had only 1 12" rat to get rid of.

At 2:40 we started to head in and call it a day when . hit a fish on the jig in some grass. He winched the fish in and it was another 14" that helped. So out went the last 12" fish and we figured we had a decent shot at the money.

The weigh-in started and there were a lot of 7 and 8 fish bags for 7-9 pounds. It was a real rat-fest. Then we heard someone have a bag for 14 change and figured we were fishing for second place now. Boats 15-20 got called to weigh-in so we started bagging our fish. Until then we both figured we had around 13-14 pounds but after seeing our fat 14 inchers and kicker we put ourself at almost 15 pounds and had a chance.

I walked up and looked at the board and leading was 14.61. Also right then a friend of mine had just taken over lunker with a 4.16. But after looking at the fish I realized we were way off and our fish was probably around 5. So I knew we had lunker. I dumped the fish in the basket and they clocked in at 14.91. Just enough for first. And our big fish went 5.39.

The only real error I made during the day was loosing a solid fish at the boat that would have helped a little more. But that happens, I didn't fight the fish incorrectly, it just made that one last dive and threw the hook. We really made all the right moves as to where to fish at what times. But 14.91 is a lot lower than what it takes to win that tournament so it was a very tough day to find quality fish.

The two big things I learned.... always have a follow up bait ready, this was the reason we probably put 8 of our 13 keepers in the boat. Secondly, cull as much as possible. ;D . We culled about 5-6 times and probably only gained about 2 pounds. But we needed every bit of it for the win.

8-)

34 boats on an 87 acre lake? :o

I fish some T's on a 280 acre lake and 12-15 boats seems crowded! ;D

I'm surprised you guys weren't getting your lines all tangled up and such.
