Spinning or Baitcast for Jerkbaits

Featured Replies

Do you guys prefer to use a spinning rod or a casting rod for jerkbait fishing. I know a lot of people who insist that spinning rods give you more control over jerkbaits but I really prefer using my baitcaster. I have tried many times fishing jerkbaits with spinning tackle but I always end up going back to my baitcaster. I just feel like I can manipulate the bait better. What are your preferences. Is there any disadvantage to using baitcasting gear?

I use spingear only because  i can cast them farther, no other reason.

I use spinning gear for jb's in open water, and casting gear for jb's for around cover.

I prefer bait caster as well.

Reel: Either, as long as the gear ratio is quick enough to recover line between jerks.

Rod: The important part. It needs to be instantly responsive, and that means a stiff tip. A soft tip absorbs your efforts at jerks and virtually nullifies the subtle twitches when you want them. With a soft-tipped rod I find myself working way too hard, and looking like I'm doing some kind of dance to get that plug to dance. Once a friend of mine had a soft -tipped rod that he accidently broke about 4inches off the tip. That rod turned into his favorite jerkbait rod instantaneously.

I use spinning for the smallest baits, and either for the larger.

I don't agree at all, but like other aspects of fishing, personal

preference trumphs traditional thinking:

(1) I have no problem working jerkbaits or topwater lures on a

rod with a soft tip.

(2) There is no real "hook-set" with jekbaits, the fish

hook themselves.

(3) Playing a fish caught on a treble hook is much better with a forgiving rod.
