Caught This While Bass Fishing

Recommended Posts

I was fishing my favorite lake this past Saturday and I caught what I believe is a Shad.

    Am I correct?

shiner perch.

This is a Shiner Perch: shiner_perch.jpg  I believe that the fish you caught is a White Perch.  Very close though other than the yellow stripes.

Definately a white bass, we catch them all the time fishing smaller crankbaits and minnow looking lures. They are pretty fun because they are usually schooled up, and are petty good eating, except for all the spines and sharp gills.

White perch. They live in fresh water, salt water, and brackish water.  They can also be known by other names.  See crappie/calico bass, or bunker/pogie/mossbunker/menhaden.

What Rhino said.  Aggressive little buggers and they're all over the place.

White perch is good guess.

It is definately a White Perch.  If you fish the Potomac, you know them right when you see them.  They actually fight really hard.

Hybrid/white bass, they are really close to each other in species.  The Hybrids get big, 15lb and over.  The whites only get 3 or 4lbs tops but big fighters and as someone said earlier not too bad to eat if you cut out the dark red strip down the back.  Deff. not a crappie, white or blk.  White perch is the name for white crappie.  Shad don't get much bigger than that and it's tough to catch them on rod/reel.

White perch is not just a name for white crappie. They are completely different. In the south some people erroneously call crappie white perch but white perch is a species of its own.

And shad do get bigger than that.

It looks like a white perch to me.
