Need to take a vote. My brother just moved near me, so now he is going to be able to fish much more than he used to, he has one good combo, and one so-so combo.  He has no baits or organizers or anything like that. I don't mind him using mine, but I know how cool it was to get my own stuff. So....

Would you rather get a pretty good third combo for christmas, or would you rather get a load of your own baits, hooks, tacklebox, bags, etc.....

Tackle.

Although I fish technique specific rods, all my (or anyone's) fishing

could be done on one combination. Get some tackle, catch a bunch

of fish and build on what you have.

Here are some suggestions:

Get some tackle. How about shakey heads, a couple Rapala DTs one for each depth, a buzzbait, a spinnerbait, a couple jigs, some senkos, and a couple local favorites and put them in a tacklebox. Get his tackle selection started so he can add on over time.

Definitely tackle. Last Christmas I bought my brother a tackle bag, a bunch of lures, and a Cabela's gift certificate. It was at least as fun for me to put the stuff together as it was for him to receive it  ;)

Of course, he still uses all my stuff. I don't think he got the hint.

I vote for tackle.

Falcon

has anyone mentioned "tackle".

if he is not use to fishing as much, why over whelm him with different rods for different purposes. teach him the different lures.

im going to have to vote the in the minority. i 'd have him get a nice combo and a pack of gama EWG 's and some trick worms.  let him use some of your baits and he can buy baits a few at a time after that. maybe he will replace any cranks he loses.

I'd get him the combo.  As a guy who's brothers always insist on borrowing rods/reels, and only bringing their own pack of worms, i'd like them to beat up their own rods... and I'll supply some worms.  ...lol

Can't throw the tackle without a combo.

He can always mooch tackle off you. Good combo will make fishing much more enjoyable. Slowly add tackle as needed

Tackle

If he already has a decent, versatile combo, I'd have to vote for tackle.   It's so pretty and you can use the lures as christmas tree ornaments (just keep the cat away) until fishing season begins again.
