thanks man, he put up a hell of a fight.  I was fishing alone so It was hard to net him by myself but I made do.

You can... In a couple of the rivers around here, reds will move in from the gulf and you'll catch a few while bass fishing sometimes.

I thought they also went by the name of channel bass.

Just checked.  They do.  It's the state fish of N. Carolina.

So, it is indeed a bass.
