Featured Replies

ok here is the problem my last couple of outings my knots have been really bad. i was fishing once and i broke off until i lost all my hooks! then yesterday the same thing i got broken off like 4 times. i am fish a 3 inch stik-O on a 2/0 offset shank wormhook EWG. i am using a 6.6 foot medium-heavy rod and a dawia d force reel the knot is a palomar. i respooled once cause i was using cheap line. the i put spiderwire on and had the same results. i'm switching back to the other stuff cause i did better with that. i was thinking of using a double clinch knot from know on. please give me some help with this one it will be greatly aprecated.

You need new line. A Palomar Knot will not fail if properly tied and won't fail repeatedly even if you have twisted the line, failed to properly lubricate the line (spit) or not fully cleared the eyelet of the hook. Change your line and take your time and make sure you have completed the knot. This is a 100% knot, it will not fail.

I'm with roadwarrior here I believe. We could offer you several other knots to try and learn, but if you're tying palomar and breaking, then either like he said, your line is crap or you need to make sure that you're tying the palomar correctly. This is a very effective knot. Did you maybe purchase the monofilament from a tackle supply house that had it sitting in the sunlight or on the shelf for 37 years or something?

Here's a good knot site.  Just make sure that the knot is correct.  It doesn't take much to screw one up and lose 40-50% of it's effectiveness.

I agree with the Palomar.  If you are using mono ALWAYS wet the line before pulling it tight.  If you do not wet it the line creates friction as you pull it tight, which generates heat and really weakens the line.

get yourself some fireline.  it wont break :D  (well i haven't had mine break yet this summer)

or just some decent mono....spiderwire sucks imo....it broke on me alot too.

Maybe you should also consider the lb test line your are using especially if the knot was tied correctly. Also especially if you are fishing around any hard cover make sure you check your line for any weak spots. Just two more things to keep in mind.

k i figured it was the line cause first i had some southbend line it was really cheap which is why i bought it 1.45 for 900 yards anyways spiderwire i thought was good but i know it sucks now i was using 6 pound test. so i don't think a 2/0 hook and a 3" Stik-O would go anywhere on 8 pound suffix but your oppinon is always good to have so what do you guys think thanks a lot

I've always used the improved clinch knot up until this year. I had 14# Trilene big game on my baitcaster. I broke off several fish and the line broke right at the knot, I did a search on line for fishing knots and learned how to tie the polymor knot. I haven't broken off a fish since.

The pros who teach at Bassmaster University say to always tie a palamor knot.

The enhanced chinch knot is also a good one to tie when you can't tie a palamor.

I always tie a palamor, even on buzz and spinner baits.

And it is extremely important to wet the line when tying the knot.  The wetter the better.

Remember to pull the tag line and the regular line hard to make sure you have not burned the line.

If you have burned the line the line will break off and you will have to retie.

It takes some practice to tie a palamor but it is worth the effort to learn.

My vote is on the palomar and stren and trilene all year.  Unless I punching grass, then braid is in.  There are some links that have been posted before, not sure where their at.  Sounds like you've got the knot.

palomar i is the only knot i use.  i have used it with stren, vanish, yozuri hybrid, and japanese nylon line, not failed me yet.  however i did have a similar problem as you are describing using cheap line.  i abondoned my thriftyness and used stren till i found yozuri and japanese lines.  cant go wrong with better line and the proper tying of a 100% knot.  good luck.

When you are using braid don't use a regular palomar knot because it will slip out. Double the line and pass it through the eye of the hook and do an overhand knot then do another overhand knot then pass the lure through the loop. Its called a double palomar knot and will not slip. On mono make sure you wet the line before you tighten it because you will burn the line and weaken the knot. Check your hook eye because sometimes the eye is not closed all the way and the knot will slip out.

Every knot I tie with my line with is a polymar knot. It has 100% knot strength if tied properly. I have never found my line to break at the knot when using it.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I've seen here and elsewhere that the Palomar should be tightened down after wetting by pulling the TAG end only and others say pull both ends. I just watched myself tie it and I pull the tag till it' closes up a bit and then both ends tight.

I haven't used it all that much, but I don't want to find out at the wrong time I'm doing it wrong.

Anybody have problems with either of these ways?

Only pull the tag end, slowly (even when properly wetted you will notice it gets a little crinkled up). When you are basically done, wet it again then pull it tight with both the main line and tag to finish the knot. Then trim the tag. I'm so confident in the knot, I trim it close, probably within 1/16-1/8".

One more suggestion:

If you've caught the line in the eyelet opening or part of the knot is "stuck", cut it off and re-tie, don't settle for "almost right".

the plomar knot is 100% just practise tying it and make sure you get some line with goo knot strength just in case
