BPS hook quality?

Featured Replies

anyone know the quality of the worm hooks at BPS?

The reviews on the site are good but that might not mean much.....

But $5 for 20 hooks vs $3 for 5 gammys i'm gaining interest in them

Don't skimp on hooks. Line either. Out of that 20, you might tie one on and it breaks on your biggest fish. No knock on BPS hooks, I would just recommend staying with Gammy or Owner or Mustad. (VMC?)

JMHO

A couple of years ago, I was fishing from the back of the boat with one of our club members in a tournament.  We had pre-fished for two days and had found a good group of fish and even stuck a few.  On tournament day, my boater broke out his supply of BPS hooks and started missing fish right and left.  After several fish came unbuttoned, we talked and I took a look at his hook, the point looked like the end of a pencil - he switched back to gammy's and never missed another fish.  Just an observation from the field.

I tried them once, it held up just fine wtih the smaller fish, but the hook broke on about a 6 lber. >:D

I would much rather spend more on a good quality hook than save a few bucks and lose a good fish.

They are ok, really lightwire hooks but seem to dull quickly.  I would rather fish gamakatsu

They work just fine I use an assortment of BPS,Cabelas and VMC hooks and never had any problems.

as an aside I love when Iread things like " a 6#'r broke it off" If you didnt get it to the boat how can you say how much it weighed?

Save money on something else. Don't skimp on hooks.

Better names include VMC, Owner, Mustad, Gamakatsu and XPoint.

I think he is talking about using them to catch fish, not just tieing on to look shiny. ;D

I agree, but is there anything you should really skimp on!!

I've been using nothing but BPS EWG hooks for the past year and can count on one hand the number of fish I've lost, and I think the majority of those could be attributed more to poor hookset than bad hooks.

I figured it would be too good to be true.....Just so many to get!  EWG, straight shank, heavier flipping gauges, finesse and all the sizes!   it never ends!   :-/

Maybe "moving lure" rods.

"Functionally" nothing above Citica baitcasters and Stradic spinning reels

Never buy ANY fishing equipment that is not on sale.

I bought a pack of BPS trebles a few weeks ago and noticed when I got them home that the package has the VMC logo on it and they look just like the comparable VMC hooks...could BPS have VMC package their hooks to sell as BPS hooks???

I was bed fishing and got a good look at the fish before even hooking the fish.  And I did say ABOUT 6 lbs, which would mean that I was guessing at the weight.  But that's what I get for not using a good quality hook I guess. ::D

I've never used anything but their octupus hook for wacky rigging.  It was the first time I used braid, about a year ago.  I got caught on a stump and hear the braid would straighted out hooks. So I put the thumb on the spool and walked backwards.  After a few steps, I hear a loud snap, Ithough it was my braid.  It wasn't. It was the hook. It snapped in half.  I've never used another BPS hook.

I use Gamakatsu and Owner. I like Mustad for somethings, like on spinnerbaits and jigs.  and I use Mustad on my jigs.

I have to say i switched to Gammy's yes they are great. But I had more fish come unbuttoned on those then any bps. And they bent SO easily

Why?  Because it snapped intead of straightening out?  What's the difference?

Absolute junk.

I was fishing my pond last summer and one rod was rigged with a gammy and the other was rigged with the bass pro hook. I got snagged with the gammy and hook snap immediately, when i reeled in i was astonished, i wanted to see if they were really that weak so i grabbed my pliers and tried to bend it and it snapped again, so i tied on a bps hook and next time i got snagged i had to cut the 65# braid in order to get off, it just would not come loose, also many instances of me pulling in #50+ tree branches on an Basspro hook. Sure they might get dull after awhile, but you get 25 in a pack for $5 so just grab a new one and you're all good to go. So IMO they work fine and price is right...When in Rome.

Never buy ANY fishing equipment that is not on sale.

A point that is hard to dispute ;D ;D

Once in a while I see VMC hooks on sale. It's good to know that they are getting a strong endorsement. :D

I never tried them, but I am happy with my Mustads and see no need to compromise on an item as important as a hook.

I must be missing something.  I have used BPS EWG 3/0 hooks off and on for 7 years and never had a problem with them.

I bought one pack of 5/0 straight shanks. I havn't fished much with them but they are as sharp as any hook right out of the package. I'll see how they'll hold up this year. So far, no problem.

Just where do you believe BPS purchases it's hooks from? Hmmmm....maybe one of those companies? I'm sure they don't make their own! That being said, I totally agree with buying the best hooks you can. Take a good look at Daiichi. Some great hooks!
