Fish Chris

What are you REALLY good at ? (OK to brag here ;-)

Recommended Posts

Ya' know, most of what I do..... fishing in places that hold a lot of big fish.... fishing a LOT.... fishing with methods proven to catch big fish... just makes it inevitable that I'm going to catch some big fish.

I tell guys all the time, giving all the same great blessings I have had with this stuff, they would likely do just as well, if not better. Seriously.

But you wanna' here me brag about something ??? Okay, I KNOW how to play a fish ! No.... I mean, I REALLY know how to play a fish ! It's like I do it without thinking. It's either ripping drag, or its coming in right now. And I don't care how light the tackle, or how big the fish. It's all really the same thing anyway. You have a clutch (your drag system) and a load (the fish) and if your gear is solid, and your drag is smooth, that fish will eventually wear out. Also in your favor, most fish weigh almost "zero" lbs, in the water.

My two best points of advice when fighting a fish is;

1) Don't reel if the fish is taking drag... especially with a spinning reel.

2) If a fish stops taking drag, get on his arse RIGHT NOW !

NEVER allow a stalemate. Remember, you could pull a small boat in with the pole your holding, if the motor is turned off.

Okay, so that's what I'm the shiz-nit at  ;)

What aspects of fishing are you really good at ?

{please throw modesty to the wind :-)

Curious,

Fish

Give up?

Fish Chris by the looks of the big fish your holding you"ve got to be really good at playing fish, congrats on that talent. what I'm really good at is letting them get away.

I think cart7t's Giraffe is in the middle of the rut.

The only thing that comes to mind that I'm really good at is cranking bandit 200's over the top of weeds. For some reason I have a good feel with just hitting the tops of the weeds and getting strikes. I know it sounds silly and simple, but that's what I'm good at.

;D ;D

I'm really good at fighting fish too. Agree with you on both points, except for one part of #1 -drag. I don't use drag on a spinning reel. I never have, and just can't let a mindless box of gears give line for me. That's my job. I can take the line as far to the limit as I choose and give only when I need to. I can relax tension some when I want to put a stale-mating fish off balance for a moment.

I also love fighting fish on fly tackle. At first it feels like you have less control, until you get used to it and realize you have more control, especially in moving water.

Lessseee...I'm a die-hard fisherman, until I get hungry. But give me a sandwich and LOOK OUT! I'm back in business. 8-)

I have a bunch!

Instinctively knowing what not to do, then doing it!

Coming up with grand plans for a lake/bait/technique, and then doing terrible!

Catching 4-7 lbers. You  can have all your stinking 15+'s but I'll get on them sweet 5lbers all day long, lol.

Being way out of position when that fish finally eats and getting a Richard Simmons hookset on her.

Missing fish

Arguing with lake staff

Hitting trout boats with swimbaits as they drive over the point I'm fishing.

Sleeping

Im extremely good at watching movies

Beating the ever loving crap out of rods, reels, and baits

Drinking orange juice

Making fun of idiots

Having buddies that actually catch big fish ;D

Im really good at casting i can put any bait in any little hole, Ive just been good ever since i got my first baitcaster. I owe it all in part to my love for shimano curados man they are the best and you cant beat the price or the ease of maintanance

Putting teener's in the boat. LMB over 15 lbs are very rare fish, you can't afford to lose any big bass you hook...period.

This is simply the difference between success and failure. I consider myself to be as good as any trophy bass fisherman out there and I have lost few. Lets make that 3 in over 40 years of pursuing giant bass and I remeber every moment in full color. The fact that I have put hundreds in the boat, the 3 misses still huant me.

How do you prevent from making a mistake; be prepared, check knots, change line, rod giudes and use only sharp premium hooks. Tune your tackle, reel drags and fish like the next cast is the fish.

Position yourself to be able to land the bass, keep it under control and in front of you, every second and put the bass in the boat as quickly and calmly as possible.

Giant bass can only fight a few minutes at the longest, stay cool, there will be a lot of time to celebrate or ponder what went wrong.

Right on. Thanks for all the replies guys. Some funny, some serious, but all, fun to read :-)

Oh and BTW Donbeatya, that is certainly something to be proud of. But since you mention it, I have to say, I am probably the worst caster on this forum ! Seriously, I suck at casting ! Why do you think I only use a spinning rod ??? With a baitcaster, I'll either shoot it straight in the air.... or straight down at the water 6 feet in front of me, and either way, I'd be lucky not to get a backlash.

Even with Spinning gear, my acuracy is spotty at best. Then again, I've only been fishing for 40 years..... So if you give me 40 more, I might have it down ;-)

All I can say is, try being born left handed, then being forced to be right handed, by old school parents. Oh well.

Peace,

Fish

For the short time I've been bass fishing seriously I think I'm good at flipping.  By no means an expert but from the first time I tried it I feel I was average.  Was just never that hard for me.
