when is your bass opener?

Recommended Posts

I am reading so much about people catching bass right now and am wondering what are your seasons? for us here in MN our season is from 5/23/09 until 02/28/10. and one thing I have always wondered about is, can you fish for bass before the start of the "season" as long as you don't keep any? it's killing me reading about people catching fish while there is still ice on the lakes up here. and just knowing I have to wait until may 23erd is worse.

Many waters in NY are catch and immediate release, artificial baits only during the off season, Dec. 1 through the Friday preceding the 3rd Saturday in June.

Washington State is year round for bass except on select trout lakes where they lock access.....usually urban lakes.

A bass season??? Why would anyone live somewhere that restricted the days you can fish for bass?

Unbelievable.

In Texas its 365 24/7.  Anyone who proposed a season would be shot.

Here in Michigan it's a catch and immediate release from the last Saturday in April to the Saturday before memorial day. And the regular season is Saturday before Memorial day to Dec. 31. Crazy but that's what it is. I think Lake st clair is slightly different.

No closed season in RI.

You cannot fish trout waters (even for Bass) from the last day in Feb (29th) till the 2nd Saturday in April (Opening Day)

In ILL. there are some site specific regulations but basically all year.

If you have a closed season, check if it is closed for keeping fish or targeting fish.

Use a tube and say you're walleye fishing. ;D

It took a LONG time for us to get that C&R season too!!!  That's only a couple years old.  Unfortunately, on Oneida (my home lake), the C&R season doesn't start until the first Saturday in May because of those darn Walleye guys cryin'!!!!

I don't ice fish so the day after ice out is my season opener.  It's usually pretty tough until we get some warmer weather, but I got out for an hour this weekend and caught 3 so I'm happy to be catching again.

The OLA was speaking for, and made up of, the 'cryin' Walleye guys' who were worried about people going out and poaching Walleyes.

My problem with that has always been, what about the perch fisherman out there during this time.  They're using live bait and fishing in the same areas as the walleye and no-one is worried about them poaching!!

They aren't worried about poachers - they just don't want bass anglers there.  If they could simply ban bass fishing altogether, they would.  This was the next best thing.  Look at some of the asinine comments made by readers.

In Southern Manitoba we have a general closer (all species included).  Season closes April 1st and opens the second Saturday in May.  We are however allowed to fish stocked trout lakes during the general closer...but only for trout.  Fortunatley in Northwestern Ontario the season never closes for bass, so it's only a 2 hour drive to some awesome smallie waters.  But for the most part we have ice on most of our lakes and rivers till mid-end of April.
