Why does everyone buy the lures that win The Classic

Featured Replies

I'm amazed that everyone goes out and buys the lures that win the Classic.  Shallow cranks have been around for years, now that KVD won with one, everyone is buying them...Just boggles my mind!

Happens every year man.

I agree, very entertaining.

I find it funny. The only Classic bait I have ever bought was the bait Aaron Martens finished second with at the 2004 Classic.

It's not just the Classic either.

The Basstrix paddle tails, the Sebile Magic Swimmer and the Rago SKT swimmer come to mind as well.  Not that these aren't fish catchers, they just really weren't anything "brand new" when they won a tournament or helped someone weigh in a huge sack in the Elites.

Win on Sunday, sell on Monday. An old statement that still holds true.

So many people don't realize that it's the fisherman not the lure and the companies know this and take advantage of the peoples stupidity.

The Chatterbait was at the Classic Expo the three years before Morris gave Clausen a run for his money in 2006.

Yep, that's why there's a huge effort on behalf of the sponsors to ensure their angler has a shot at winning the Classic. I'm NOT implying anyone is cheating.  Just saying they get a lot of information and help that the weekend anglers will never experience.

As for the bait sales, I find it quite amusing.  People are always looking for the silver bullet - that magic bait that's going to catch a ton of fish for them.

Funny though, when a bait does come along that seems to fit the bill (aka the Senko), many people dismiss it as being "too easy", or that it takes no talent to use, a "crutch", etc. Can't win no matter what.  ;D

I call it the magic bait syndrome.

None of us are completely immune.

Oh hell no.  ;D

I can laugh at myself from time to time.

I used to fall victim to that as well.  But now I try to throw something that nobody else is throwing.  And that means staying clear of the popular baits - especially the hot-bait-of-the-moment.

But if you ask me what I'm throwing...it's a Senko.  ;)

The Bait Monkey is loving every minute of it! We all get caught up in the hype to some degree and I would guess most tackle bags have lures that rarely see the water.

For example, Bait manufactures understand that they can't really change a lipless crankbait so they have to sell you that theirs is better.

We all look for that "silver bullet" or better technique, but in the long run, we still rely on what works for us.

I just wanted to order some colors of SK Silent cranks because I don't have any good cranks left.  I was pretty surprised to find that someone totally raided the colors in both the red eyed shads and kvd silent cranks.  As far as people picking the exact color as KVD did in the classic, that's just stupid.  People need to stop and realize that he chose that color because that specific situation dictated that he use that color.  It makes no sense to me, really....

One might as well ask "Why has Nike paid such lucrative contracts to Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie to wear their logos?"

The answer to that is the same as the answer to the title of this thread, because a large enough percent of the consumers in any sport think they will do better, or, they are groupies, wanting to emulate winners.

Who knows?  Maybe KVD would have caught more fish with a wood clothespin adorned with feathered treble hooks.

I bought my KVD 1.5's and 2.5's about 3 weeks ago, so I don't feel as victimized. However, I have about 4 lbs of creature baits that I need to use before I consider HAVOC!  :D

This is a "perfect storm" too for sale of this particular classic winning bait.  Crankbaits, espeically the square bill and silent varities, have been the buzz in the industry over the last several months.

Then KVD/SK introduce his version and he not only wins the Classic, he does it convincingly even with other competitors fishing the same water as he.

SK couldn't have scripted it any better.

Did you have to go and let the color thing out of the bag. I have always been able to find my baits because our water is so different than what the Elites fish. Now my colors will be gone  ;D

I am so not the bait junky anymore:

Only throw one kind of frog

Only use 2 colors of tubes

Only throw one color of fluke

Have 20 cranks, but I don't even own a square billed crank. And most of them are the same  just a different color.

What I do have works around here, I think location is the biggest key.

All those guys were whacking the fish that last day and they were not all using a square billed crank.

All I can say is.... I don't own any banjo minnows or helicopter lures! ;D

Well, not everyone ;)

I don't even know what KVD was throwing.... Wait.... i think he won the Bass Master this year, right ?

Anyway, I can just imagine that whatever he was throwing, everybody and their grandmother will be throwing it this year. So, I should probably look into this, just to make sure I don't throw anything like it :)

Why does everyone buy the lures that win The Classic

First: "everybody" .... but don 't include me in the "everybody"

Second: why ? .... because there 's a big bunch of people ( aka: everybody ) that think/believe/hope having the bait Mr KVD used to win the Classic is going to help or solve the problem of catching fish for them. The perpetual quest for the magic bullet.

Like someone said: win on Sunday, sell on Monday.

The BaitMonkey loves herds.

used em last season and stocked up a few months ago. Now everyone will think I jumped the bandwagon :-/
