straight shank or EWG when flipping soft plastics?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to see what you guys use.  Some people say you get better hook ups with a straight shank wanted to see what you guys have to say about it.

IMO you get better hook ups with straight shanks. I use them for flipping and evertything else, except senkos.

I use a reaction Innovations BMF hook (straight shank) for 90% of my flipping baits.

For flipping tubes I use an Eagle Claw HP hook.

On occasion I use a Gammy EWG superline hook, but that's rare.

Rigging the plastic correctly along with the 2 Slashes on shank help keep the plastic in place.

Look at a picture of a EWG hook, notice the distance from the point across to the eye; now look at a straight shank and ask yourself what do you see?

With the straight shank there is nothing in the way of the point correct?

I use straight shank hooks on thin plastics up to the size of a Senko at which time I switch to a Strike King Saber Point Round Bend Offset; again look at the point in relation to the eye.

Well, Catt's advice is always spot on, so I'm not arguing with his point.

However, I fish Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks for most soft

plastics. For big worms (Anaconda & 7" Senkos), 5/0 Offset Round Bend.

I have no issues with hook-ups.

8-)

I use 4/0 and 5/0 EWG Gamakatsu Superline hooks for most of my flipping.  No issues with hookups.

Agreed that a straight shank hook will have better penetration, but I find myself using the Mustad EWG in 5/0 for most of my plastic combos.

The wonderful thing about fishing is multiple products work with a multitude of techniques none being better than the other.

I've used ewgs for years but this year I'm going to try Catt and RW's advice.  There are a few places I think this will increase my hookup ratios.

Yep, me too.

I like Owner EWG hooks in red...  haven't missed many fish with that hook.

I vote for the Owner Wide Gap Plus hook for most of my flipping and texas rigging presentations.  I agree though with CATT in the fact that you have a higher percentage of bites to catches with the straight shank but I tend to get hung up a little more with the straight shank than the WGP.
